I like to remember that it is possible that your friend *did* make an impact on the young person and others nearby even though it looked pretty dismal at the time.

It's difficult to stay out of the hopelessness sometimes but standing up against racism or any oppression seems hopeful to me and my guess is it is hopeful to others who see it done ... imho.
