It may well be that I am simply too close to the situation to be unbiased, but perhaps if you were aware of the circumstances I experienced. Does his file inform you that I was forced to watch my wife slowly lose her mental facilities? That she slowly broke as she tried to recall something she had known since childhood, but found herself unable? That she attempted to memorize it from textbooks for hours on end though it slipped from her mind like water from a sieve - and all because of Lewis and his nanomites?

Perhaps then you might understand why I find this idea to be everything from reprehensible to utterly irresponsible.

This smacks of blatant disregard for the suffering he caused for the sake of technology.

The Barge is not a laboratory. If you wish to engage in mad science, go home.

The science isn't mad, nor is it even inherently bad. It was used maliciously, as I'm seeing, and abused in a way it shouldn't have, but that can be said of any tool. A simple scalpel can end a life as easily as take one, depending on the person wielding it.

But that aside, your feelings are no less valid and I do not wish to make thing difficult for either you or your wife. You're not the only one to show reservations about the fitness of the Inmate to continue his work in such a way to guarantee another incident would not happen.

If an inmate wields a scalpel with the same maniacal precision as yours has done with his nanomites, you do not continue to allow them to handle sharp objects.

Have you even spoken with Martha regarding this idea of yours? Feelings aside. Has she been made aware of your intentions to try and adapt his technology for use in an area under her direct supervision?

Hold.

You aren't Rex Lewis's warden.

Have you spoken with Frances Owens about this?

I'm... very torn on this honestly. On one hand, I trust Rex. I trust Rex to work with me in my infirmary, and I trust him to handle scalpels and when there was the curse in effect, I did put him in charge of stitches and doing that sort of thing ( ... )

[He nods slowly, listening]

Yes, I'm learning now just how invasive the entire experience was for everyone. With that information, I suppose asking that everyone just ignore his work would be a bit much to ask.

I thank you for your honest and hope that no old wounds were opened in my making this request.

It wouldn't work, there's no way that it would. People... in some ways the Barge has short memories, but on some things it has very long ones. This is going to be a long one, I expect.

I'm sorry, Black Jack, I know you're asking out of wanting to good with them. I just think they'd do more harm than that.

And don't worry, I'm fine. I was fixed in the end and understood why he did it.

So it seems, so it seems.

There's no reason to apologize. When I was told of what he'd done, I expected that there'd be resistance to the idea. I just didn't realize the extent to which it had effected so many on the Barge.

...Martha said everything I might have, and much more eloquently. But I'd like to add that the nanomites were used to control people's minds, which can cause serious psychological damage and that doesn't heal easily. If at all.

I just don't think there's any way to be truly sure that it wouldn't happen like that again.

That's quite true. Unfortunate, but true.
