Tutorial - Yule Ball Poster Icon

Nov 30, 2005 21:11

Tutorial for this icon:

Other icons made using this style can be found here.

PLEASE NOTE: This tutorial is intended merely as a guide and to give you insight into how some effects are created. It is not intented for you to create an icon exactly the same but with a different picture. Please experiment using the tutorial as a guide only to create an icon that is uniquely yours.

  • Made in Photoshop CS but should be translatable to any program.
  • Assumes a basic knowledge of Photoshop tools and techniques.
  • Unless otherwise stated layers that have a black or white background is only to show what is actually on the layer and are not actually in the icon.
  • Layer numbers are ascending with layer 01 being the bottom and layer 10, 20, etc being the top most.
1) First off, I made the background by just experimenting with different layer and effects and eventually I settled on what's below. If anyone knows who the brush is by then let me know.

2) Still working on the background.

3) Cedric image taken from those four Yule Ball posters which now I cannot find where they are.

4) On layer 17 to copy a selection from a layer and all the layers below it go to Edit > Copy Merged in Photshop CS. I am unaware if there is a similar function in other graphics programs.

5) And the text.

6) Flatten the icon, copy, sharpen the layer and adjust the opacity unless the icon looks right and it's finshed.

Again note that this tutorial is not meant to be followed step by step but to serve as a guide for you to experiment from.

I hope that was informative but if you have any questions about anything at all please don’t hesitate to ask.
