Goodbye
Getting in the car and driving away was so hard, kissing him and still managing to walk away was harder, sitting in this cabin, staring out the window at the falling rain pinning for Logan and my friends, my old life and even my job at Jam Pony, while Zack stayed in the other room was painful. Turning away from the window I sighed. Thoughts interrupted by a crazy idea.
(Just a phone call, that’s can’t hurt can it?) She thought to herself, picking up the scrambled cell Logan gave her.
Bling answered, from a hospital and told her about the migrating bullet fragment in Logan’s back. As soon as the words came out of his mouth she knew why the phone call was a bad idea. She was going to go back to Seattle, back home… to Logan and nothing would stop her.
Standing up and moving towards the door, only to be stopped by Zack, who emerged from the adjoining room. Calling her back and questioning her, throwing accusations and insults and ‘you’ll get caught’ at her. But it didn’t stop her. She needed to be with Logan, he needed her right now. It was her fault he’d been shot in the first place, if she’d just helped out it wouldn’t have happened, and he wouldn’t be dying.
Tear sprung to her eyes but she forced them back, now was not the time to break down in tears! He needed her; she had to be strong for him. Zack taking at her again, her shouting back.
“Call it a moment of weakness!” Max threw his words back in Zack’s face, last night he opened up to her and she was using those secrets and fears and weaknesses against him. She was a major bitch! But she didn’t care-- Logan was all that mattered right now!
Then he fought her, and she fought him back. “I’m not in the game? Guess again!” Max pulled away from him and kept walking. Instead of lying there like his mind was telling him to, Zack followed his heart and tried to stop her again.
“Maxie…” He begged. The name triggered something in her, memories of Manticore, of being so scared and alone, and then Zack would call her that and it’d be ok again, the world would be a wonderful place as long as Zack used that name. Her knees buckled and her legs gave out, collapsing to the floor she let the walls crumble and the flood of tears sprung loose. Before the first sob had even left her mouth she was wrapped in Zacks safe and loving embrace, rocking her back and forth, whispering soothing words to her.
“It’s ok Maxie, it’ll be ok. He’ll be fine without you.” Looking down at the crying girl he smiled sadly, knowing that Logan probably wouldn’t be fine. “I’ll take care of you.”
Lifting her into his arms, one arm around her back the other hooked under her knees, he carried her back into the cabin and into the bedroom. Laying her on the bed he covered her with the blanket and lay beside her. Running his fingers through her hair soothingly until she drifted off to sleep.
“It’ll be ok, Maxie.” He promised, hoping he would be able to keep it.
