Peyton fled blindly to the car. She wanted to start it up and just drive away, anywhere, but she had Dean and Angela to worry about. She got in the car, then out again and went to sit on the curb, her back to the house, leaning against the rear of the car and trying to force herself not to cry.

Angela had followed, leaving the house just a few moments behind her, and silently sat next to her at the curb. For now, she was sticking with her 'quiet support' approach.

Peyton leaned into her. "I screwed everything up, Angela. I don't think I'll ever see her again."

Angela shook her head, slipping her arm around Peyton. "Oh Sweetie, don't say that... Maybe she just needs time," she tried, ever the hopeful one.

Peyton just shook her head and leaned into Angela more. "I just want to go home," she said very quietly.

"As soon as Dean comes back out, we can," Angela promised, rubbing her friend's back soothingly.

"Dean..." Peyton made a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob. "Yeah, that's another whole mess I made."

"I don't see how," Angela said slowly, squeezing Peyton a little tighter. "I mean, he seems fine, all... not messy?"

"I told you, I fuck everything up," Peyton said, staring down at the ground. "I... I knew doing a non-exclusive thing... I knew I shouldn't do it, but I said I was fine and I was - or at least I was trying, but this kinky hate sex thing with Chuck... when it was just once I tried to just pretend it didn't happen, but now that it's on-going, I can't... And I can't tell Dean. He was honest with me about what he does and I said I was fine with it."

"But... I'm not and I need to just be grown-up and end things, but... damn it... I fell for him. I tried not to, but I did."

She turned to look Angela right in the eyes desperately. "And don't you dare ever say a word to him about how I feel about him, okay? I don't want him to know how much I care. It's not fair to him. I broke the agreement, not him."

Angela bit her lip, nodding ever so slightly. "But honey, you should say something, or... do something, if it's hurting you..." She shook her head. "You can't just leave it."

"I... I guess I just have to say I don't want to do it anymore," Peyton said very very softly. "But... I don't want to. I don't want to give him up - he's... we're not just fuck-buddies the way somebody said - and god, did that hurt. It's not just that it's great sex. He's... we're close. We're friends. I trust him and I feel safe with him. And I'm afraid of losing all that."

"I don't think you'll lose that," she said, shaking her head. "Dean's a good guy. A guy..." Which explained the Chuck thing. "But I think he might understand."

"I can't tell him, Angela. He'll just say I understood the ground rules when we started and I did - I do. And he's always been so good to me."

She put her face in her hands. "Maybe I should just go to L.A. now. Avoid the whole mess, be a continent away from Ellie, and... Hell, I could be the one who leaves for a change."

But even as she said it she was shaking her head. "No. I don't ever want to be that person. Even if that little voice in my head is right and I do actually drive them all away."

"No," Angela said immediately. "You do not drive people away. This little voice from the person beside you says wrong."

"Maybe you did understand the rules," she said. "And maybe he'll use that if you talk to him. But situations change, and just because you could do it, doesn't mean it can't change, and he should accept that."
