meredith is just jealous because she hasn't read enough james joyce. and vonnegut isn't pretentious (that would be like being happy about knowing who modest mouse is and calling yourself indie). reading (not just knowing) james joyce and quoting books like dubliners (in reference to getting a tattoo about the book) is pretentious.
