The original was a silk taffeta. The main issue seemed to be the fraying. Would cutting it on the bias make it any easier? I cut it on the grain to conserve fabric.

Yes I know how to do bias stripes, but I was left with a 4 yard by 12 inch strip of fabric after everything else was cut so there wasn't any way to even attempt to do bias with an odd piece of fabric like that!
