Lia rubbed her head with the towel trying to dry her hair more thoroughly, then wrapped herself in a large towel before making her way down to her bedroom. Once there she quickly dressed in yoga pants and a tee before tying her hair up in a loose ponytail. She poked her head into the master bathroom to watch Don completing the last of the paint work around the shower doors.

He looked up at her with an easy smile. “Hey Lia.”

Lia surveyed the room and commented, “Looks good in here.”

He sighed and stretched his torso. “Thanks. How about you?”

“Good. I got all the trim done. I may have to do some touch up, but it’s done.”

“Great. I just need to patch up one more spot of grout after I paint then I’m done too.”

“Uh, you hungry? I was going to start dinner.”

Don nodded. “Yeah, I could eat.”

“What else is new,” Lia replied chuckling. “All right, let me go check on your boy toy to see if he’s hungry too.”

“Sounds like a plan. Oh and by the way, he’s your boy toy too, Lee,” Don said with a smirk.

She leaned over kissing him on the cheek, “Actually Don, I believe you both are.” Lia headed downstairs to check on Billy. She found him out in the back yard, shirtless, in ratty torn jeans sanding the wood he was using to build a cabinet. His torso was streaked with sweat making the tone of his muscle stand out. Lia licked her lips and thought about dragging Billy upstairs to their bed, pulling off those tight ass jeans, and doing all sort of wicked things to him. Of course to be fair she would then have to repeat the same process with Don. She giggled to herself at the thought when Billy looked up at her and flashed her a grin.

She felt her cheeks flush from the look he gave her, as if he somehow knew just what she’d been thinking. She cleared her throat as she walked closer to him. “I was thinking of starting of dinner.”

“Is that what you were thinking?” His voice came out slow and gravely.

Her breath caught in her throat and her skinned tingled. “Yes, of course,” she quickly shot back. He laughed and pulled her in for a kiss. “Eww, stop it Billy! You’re sweating all over me.”

“You didn’t mind last night,” he said purring into her ear.

She giggled, “Well of course I didn’t, I was naked too!” She wiggled away from him. “So, dinner?”

“Yeah, sounds good. I’m almost done for the day. I’m just gonna put primer on the two shelves and start to clean up.”

“Okay. Do you want me to get you a beer or something?”

He nodded his head, “Yeah, but you don’t have to get it for me.”

“Eh, I don’t mind,” she said with a smile. “You and Don do nice stuff for me all the time. I’ll go grab ya one.”

“All right.”

She walked into the kitchen, opened the fridge and pulled out three beers, opening them each with a twist.

“All done,” Don announced as he joined Lia in the kitchen. “One of them for me,” he asked as he gestured to the open beers.

“Yup,” she answered, handing him one.

Don took a long pull of his as Lia sipped hers. “Wanna do something on the grill,” he asked before taking another pull.

“Hmm, yeah, good idea. I have some Mahi Mahi and veggies we can grill.”

“Sounds good to me. Do you want me to help you prep?”

“Nah. I got it.” She kissed him on the cheek. “You’re so good to me.”

Dryly he replied, kissing her back, “I try.” He pointed at the third beer. “That for Billy?”

“Yup.”

“I’ll take it to him and see if he needs any help.” He grabbed the other beer and started to walk away. He said over his shoulder, “Actually Lee, it’s you that’s good to us.”

She sighed happily to herself as she began to pull out the veggies to chop. She watched her two men through the patio door, talking and drinking their beers. Lia always enjoyed watching them interact with each other, whether it was a simple conversation, to an outright war on who had the better outfield defense, to their most intimate moments. Don and Billy knew each other’s bodies like they were their own, always knowing how to elicit the most passion from every kiss and caress. At times it made her jealous of the relationship the two of them had, until they would direct that intensity towards her, bringing her to her proverbial knees and left her begging for more. Those two men, her men, had power over her against which she didn’t struggle. She let them have it, knowing that they could be trusted to do her no wrong. Lia felt her body start to get warm at the thoughts she was having. She shook her head and pushed those thoughts aside less she cut herself and have to explain to Don and Billy why she wasn’t paying attention while she was chopping the vegetables.

Alan, holding a large shopping bag, knocked on the door, and waited for someone to answer.

He heard the door open and smiled brightly at the lovely young woman his son was seeing. “Hello Lia.”

“Uh, hey Alan,” Lia replied sweetly.

“I’m sorry to pop over unannounced like this and I won’t make it a habit.”

Lia waved her hand, “Don’t worry about it. Come on in.” She stepped aside to let Alan in before closing the door behind him.

Alan smiled again. “Thanks. Well, the reason I stopped by is I was going through some boxes and found some things I thought Don should have.”

“Yeah?” Lia took the bag and set it on the dining room table. She asked as she gestured to the bag, “May I?”

“Sure, sure, go ahead.”

She nodded before she slowly lifted out a wooden box. She opened the lid and exclaimed, “Oh Alan, these are lovely.”

“Margaret had planned to give them to Donnie after he told us he had asked Kim to marry him.”

“Oh.”

Alan cleared his throat and noticed that Lia had become slightly uncomfortable when he mentioned Don’s old fiancée. “But we never got to give it to them. You know, I think that Margaret would be pleased that you’re in Donnie’s life. She would have really liked you, as do I.”

Lia blushed, “I would have really liked to have met her, Alan. She sounds like she was a wonderful woman.”

“She was,” he replied solemnly.

“Hey Pop! I didn’t know you were coming by,” Don said as he strolled into the house. “Hey look, Mom’s glass ornaments. I loved these as a kid.” Don pulled one out to admire it.

“Yeah well, your mother always wanted you to have them and I figured it was time. There’s something else I thought you should have,” Alan beamed at his son before pulling out another item wrapped in bubble wrap.

Don took the item from his Dad and slowly unwrapped it. He spoke almost reverently, “Dad, this is Mum Mum’s Seder plate.”

Alan smiled gently saying, “Well I thought it was time you had that too since you have your own house now. It’s part of your heritage along with your mother’s ornaments.”

Don’s face lit up into a thousand watts. “Thanks Dad, this means a lot to me to have these.”

Lia stepped closer to Don and leaned into him. “Yes Alan, thank you. It means a lot to all of us to have them.”

“Sure, well, that was all. I should get going,” Alan responded.

“You don’t have to go Dad, we were just gonna start dinner. You should join us.”

“I don’t want to impose.”

“Not at all Dad, please?”

Alan grinned widely replying, “You know I’d be happy too.”

“Great,” Don exclaimed before turning to Lia. “I started the grill. I’m gonna hop in the shower while it heats up.”

“Okay, sounds good. I’ll put the veggie shish kabobs together,” she answered back before walking towards the kitchen.

“Be back down in a few,” Don called back as he headed upstairs.

Alan watched his son for a moment before following Lia to the kitchen. He asked, “Anything I can do to help?”

Lia shook her head. “Nope, I just need to put the veggies on the skewers and season them up. But you can pull the chair cushions out for the picnic table. I put them away before that heavy storm the other day, and just in the nick of time too.”

“Sure,” Alan agreed before heading out back. Once there he caught sight of Billy Cooper priming some wood for a set of shelves. He was hard at work, humming to himself. He looked up and nodded in greeting. Alan stepped closer to admire Billy’s work, he bobbed his head in appreciation.

“Looks good. Oak?”

Billy grinned slightly in reply, “Yup, and thanks. It’s for Lia’s Italian pottery.”

“Ah. You gonna add crown to it?”

“Yeah, I was thinking about it.” He shrugged.

Alan studied Billy for a moment. “Who taught you wood craft?”

“My, uh, Granddaddy did,” Billy replied, his voice somewhat strained.

“You were close to him?”

“Yeah, him and my Granny.” Billy started to pack up his work tools, his lips in a hard line. “I lived with them from when I was eight or so.”

“Oh,” Alan replied. “I didn’t know that.”

Billy shrugged again and continued to clean up his tools.

Alan considered his words, “I guess I don’t really know all that much about you, William.”

“No, you don’t,” Billy said, meeting Alan’s eyes.

“I’m sorry for that.” Alan rubbed his forehead. “For a long time after Don left Fugitive Recovery I blamed you for what Don had become and it wasn’t ‘till all this that I learned that wasn’t the case.” He moved a little closer to Billy as he spoke, “And now, seeing you with my son and knowing that your presence is what helped keep him whole, I’m ashamed of how I acted.” Alan slowly extended his hand towards Billy and waited. “If you’d let me, I’d like to make amends and get to know you.”

Alan watched Billy look at his hand briefly before meeting his eyes. A slow grin spread over Billy’s lips as he took Alan’s hand. “Yes sir, I think I can do that. But all I ask is that you call me Billy. My grandmother only called me William when I had gotten into her larder.”

Alan smiled back. “Sure, I can do that.”

“Good. I better go get cleaned up too before dinner,” he said as Don joined them in the backyard ready to start grilling. “When I come back I’ll bring a couple of beers?”

“Works for me,” Alan answered. He watched Billy Cooper walk into the house but not before grinning at his son. He saw Don’s face light up in return. Alan sighed to himself and went to pull out the cushions for Lia. After doing so he joined his son at the BBQ.

Don glanced at his father, his eyebrows knitted together in puzzlement. “Dad? Everything ok?”

“Yeah, sure Son. Why do you ask?”

Alan watched Don study his face briefly. “I don’t know you have a look about you.”

He thought for a moment. “Let’s just say that my eyes are now clear and open.”

Puzzled again Don replied, “Uh, okay Dad.”

“Yeah Donnie, it is okay,” Alan said simply as he slung his around his son’s shoulders, giving them a squeeze.

Later on that evening, as Alan broke bread with his son and his ‘new family,’ he saw them for what they were, what they meant to each other and how their love was strong and good. He wished Margaret could see that their son had found what they had always wanted for him and even though it was different, whatever it was, it was love.
