Here “Oh come on,” Don muttered. He gestured towards the TV, then looked at Billy, who was also shaking his head, muttering under his breath.
Don sighed. “I need a beer after that call. Want one?”
“Sure, grab the chips too?”
“Mm, yeah. I think I saw some BBQ.”
“Nice.” Billy looked up. “Hey, you think if you ask nicely Lee will make some wings?”
“It could be arranged," Don said, smirking at Billy.
Billy grinned, batting his eyes. “Tell her pretty please. I’ll make it worth her while.”
Don snorted, strolled into the kitchen and spotted Lia. Her back was turned and he gave her shoulder a squeeze as he walked towards the fridge. “Lee, you gonna watch the game with us?”
Grabbing two beers out the fridge, he added, “Coop wanted to know if you’d make him some wings. He said he’d make it worth your while.” He waited for her usual flippant remark, but none was forthcoming. “Lee?”
Concerned, he put the beers down and approached her. “Lee, what’s going on?” He tilted her chin up so he could look into her eyes. “Talk to me.”
She shook her head, her eyes flicking down to a photo in her hand. “I…” She blinked back threatening tears and said, her voice small, “I always thought that I would be married and have kids by now but...” She handed him the photo. “I guess that’s not in the cards for me now, is it?” She pulled away and quickly ran upstairs, brushing by Billy as he entered the kitchen.
Frowning, he asked, “What’s going on?”
Don swore as he read the words printed on the back of the photo and then handed it to Billy.
Garrett and Kimberly Fisher would like to announce the birth of their daughter, Julia Rose.

"Whose kid?" Billy asked.
“Her ex.”
Billy's eyes narrowed. "Rick? Why's that fucker sending baby photos?"
"Not him, Garrett, the ex-fiancé. They’ve stayed friends over the years."
"Oh." Billy studied the photo. “This should be her, shouldn’t it, that's what's got her upset?" He looked back at the stairs. "She wants kids. Did you know?"
"No, we never talked about it. Before this started," Don said, gesturing between Billy and himself, "I always assumed we would talk about it if we got to that point."
Billy walked to the cabinet and pulled out the chips. "So, ever think you'd want kids?" he asked.
Don rubbed his jaw before answering. "There were some times I did. Kim and I talked about it. You?”
Billy shrugged, munching on chips. “Nah, never entered into my mind.” He took a handful of chips and munched thoughtfully. “Lee would be a good mom wouldn’t she?”
“Uh huh, great one.” Don grabbed the two beers and gave one to Billy, before taking a sip. “We’re fucking up her life aren’t we?”
“Yeah, maybe we are.” Billy began to pick at the beer label while they stood in silence. “Why couldn’t we?”
“Couldn’t we what?” Don looked up at Billy.
Billy slowly met his eyes. “You know, give her one, a kid.”
“Give her one?” Don chuckled. “You know you can't buy them at the store, right?”
“Fuck you, you’re such a dick,” Billy snapped, glaring at Don before stalking back into the living room.
“Fuck,” Don breathed and followed Billy. “You can’t be serious.” He took a good look at Billy’s face. “Shit, you are.”
“I think it if would make her happy we should consider it, at least talk about it.”
Don studied his lover and friend before answering. “Fine, let’s go talk to her.”

Don said gently, “Lee, baby?”
She replied distantly, “I’ll be down in a moment to make those wings.”
“No, that’s not why we’re here,” Billy said as he crouched in front of her.
Don added, “We wanted to talk to you about why you’re upset.”
She waved her hand in the air. “I’m not upset. I’m fine.”
“Lee, Don and I know you’re upset. So talk to us.”
“It’s fine. Just leave it.”
“I’m sorry Lia, we can’t,” Don said. “You always say whatever’s going on with any of us affects all of us.”
“Yeah, come on.” Billy took her hand, sitting down next to her.
Minutes passed before she started to talk. “I…” she began, but stopped, looking away. “For many years I thought I knew how my life would turn out and where I would be.”
“Hmm. I think we all thought that at one time or another,” Don murmured, pulling the vanity chair over to sit in front of her. “But it doesn’t always go that way. We change our minds, make other choices.”
“I know I made the right decision ten years ago, not marrying Garrett, but I can’t help but wonder.”
Billy asked, his voice strained. “Do you regret us?”
“No sweetheart, of course not.” Lia squeezed his hand. “I love us.”
Don caught Billy’s eyes. Silent communications passed between them before he spoke, “Coop and I talked a bit. What if we told you that we’re open to the discussion of having children?”
Confused, she said, “I’m sorry, what?”
“Alls we’re saying is that we don’t want you to think that the door is closed.” Billy smiled slightly.
“I appreciate what you’re saying.” She got up to leave the room and said over her shoulder, “But I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”

They looked at each other for a moment before following Lia downstairs.
“Lia, why don’t you think it’s a good idea?”
“Why not? I can think of several reasons.”
Billy crossed his arms. “Like?”
“Well, for one, it’s not like we have a normal relationship. There’s three of us, not two. How would that affect the kid? Plus, who would be the father? What, do I just have sex with the two of you ‘till I get pregnant? If that doesn’t say white trash I don’t know what does!”
“Don should be the father,” Billy blurted out.
“What?” Don and Lia said simultaneously.
“I think Don should be the father.”
“Coop, why would you say that?”
“You got roots, and a family. A kid should have that.”
“You got roots, with us,” Lia said, standing closer.
“Yeah, I know, but the kid would get to have blood roots. And besides, Don would make a good dad.”
“You’d make a good dad too, Coop.”
Billy chuckled. “Yeah, maybe.” He ran his hand through his hair. “Hmm, maybe if the first one goes well, you know, we could have another.”
Half laughing, Lia said, “You two are getting way ahead of things. I just don’t think...” Her voice trailed off. “Having children with you two would make me very happy, but we all know that it can’t always be about me and what I want.”
“Maybe it’s what we want too. It’s just something I know I haven’t considered in a long time. I don’t think we should assume the door is closed without really talking,” Don murmured.
She puffed out some air. “Okay, let’s talk about it. Shit, I can’t believe we’re gonna talk about this.”
Billy smirked. "First thing on the list might be you needing to watch your language…"

Don stood at the backdoor, barely able to make out Billy’s form in the dark. The only thing he could see clearly was the glow from the tip of the cigarette.
He slowly walked over to him and asked, “Room for one more?”
Billy looked up from the hammock with a grin and slid over. “Yeah.”
They laid there in silence, the hammock gently rocking back and forth as Billy blew out smoke circles.
“Give me a puff.”
Billy’s eyebrows rose. “You sure? It’s been, what, five years?”
Don snorted. “Yeah, I need to. Just this one last time.”
“Hmm me too.”
Don took a couple of drags and handed it back to Billy.
He took one last puff before licking his fingers to squeeze the butt out. He asked, “Where’s Lee?”
“Upstairs getting reading for bed,” Don replied, snaking his arm around Billy’s shoulders. “She knows you’re out here.”
Billy grunted, “I’m sure she does.” There was a long stretch of silence till Billy stated, “So, we’re really doing this.”
“Yeah,” Don said quietly.
“Have we lost our minds?”
The question hung in the air for a few seconds till Don answered, “Maybe.”
Billy swore under his breath. “Damn. Who’d have ever thought, you, me, us, as dads?”
He stared at the moon lit sky. “Not me.”
“Yeah.” Billy picked up the almost full pack of cigarettes and crushed them in his palm. “We should go in.”
“Yeah.” Don stood up, putting out his hand to help Billy up. "Come on.”
At the back door Lia was waiting. She crinkled her nose at them as they passed. “You two better shower before you even think of getting into bed with me.”
Billy replied, “Of course.”
“And no more smoking.”
Billy and Don smirked and replied in unison, “Yes, Mother.”
