A Question

This thought has occurred to me:
So many people I know seem to stress themselves out about hanging around people they don't really know. I suspect that a large part of this stress comes from the fact that many, not all, of them seem incapable of acting on gut instinct. For these people there must be an in depth analysis of every word, phrase, or ( Read more... )

it usually works out for me
although sometimes i say something idiotic and then have to laugh like a ditz to cover my insanity :P

and i have a tendancy to call people on stupid things they say when i'm not thinking, although since i say it with a smile it usually goes over well

i'm more likely to talk MORE and LOUDER when i'm not paying attention
but i feel pretty okay about this

I spent years working at a diner, gut instinct is all you have to go on. It usually works out okay, but you have to develop an excellent backpedaling strategy to make up for the times when it doesn't work the way you wanted. Gut instinct will usually lead you in mostly the right direction, but you need to have some social skills to back it up when you're in mixed company.

NEEEEEEEEEVER ask if someone is pregnant. EVER. I did it once when I was in sales and looked like an ass. Lost a $400 commission. I also remember someone making Crystal cry back in old Dark Dominions with that question. ;)

But gut instinct works great, but you have to think on your feet and be willing to laugh at yourself.

oh god yes, never ask if a woman is pregnant, and as a general rule i don't assume the relationship between two people until one of them brings it up somehow. too many cases of, "is that her little brother or her son?"

For me, working off of "gut instinct" tends to result in me speaking in tongues or just incomprehensible gibberish and spitting out half-finished in-jokes to fill silence. These aren't, "haha, Andrew's stupid" kind of statements, either. These are, "What the hell did he just say?" kind of statements.

Oh yeah, and I come off all snippy if I don't consciously scale back on the snark metere.
