I also thought the subject was well handled and Sarah Snook really shone. I hope her brilliant performance opens many doors for her.
Heinlein's treatment of the subject in the original story was phenomenally good for the time it was written, but he was often thought to be shocking for his down to earth attitudes and acceptance of varieties of sexuality, body image, gender roles and identification, lifestyle choices and social mores and the like.
Ethan Hawke, when he's good, he's very good and he was good in this. I really haven't seen anything he's been in since Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. I must say, a bit of maturity has made his face much more expressive now.
Thanks for posting a link to the original story - I still have the anthology I originally read it in (I'm the brunt of many a joke when it comes to my book collection - I can't bear to part with a book once I own it) but didn't have a version of it in ebook form.
Looks interesting. I like Ethan Hawke but haven't seen enough of his films.
A friend of mine told me of A Scanner Darkly. I thought it was a new film but it was made in 2006. Admittedly I kind of spoiled it for myself by reading up on it on Wikipedia but the premise was fascinating. I will still probably watch it and read the book it was based on. Pretty sci-fi as well.
That's one movie I still haven't seen. I've heard of it, but just kept forgetting to grab a look. Thanks for the reminder - it's now on my To Watch list!
It's seemed to have been released a bit under the radar, which is strange as I could see this film being quite a mainstream(ish) success. It really is a well made film and is no more different a story than, say, Inception was - and that was quite a hit. I actually prefer this film to Inception, but you get my meaning.
It won silver (2nd) in the Toronto After Dark Film Festival in October and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes one of those movies that ends up quite an earner - it really is a good film.
Oh! I missed The Babadook when it was at my local theatre but have now got a copy on DVD and I'll let you know if it's as good as I thought it would be. It's had very good reviews from critics right across the board and I loved the short film Monster that it was based around.
If you're interested, I think you can rent it from amazon and rent or buy it on iTunes - I think it was released late November in the US.
For once, we got a movie before you!!! Wonders will never cease!
Just to clarify - this movie's premise is NOTHING like Inception's. I meant it isn't standard mainstream fodder. Didn't want to give you a bum steer there.
That shark! It seems everyone's getting into the photobombing habit! LOL!
Seriously, though, I really have lost count of the times I've had to leave the water because of sharks being spotted - you never get blase about it though - it's always a scary moment. The weird thing is, we all go back in once the all clear sounds...

PDF of it here.
Side note - our family is very sensitive to Trans* issues, and felt things were well handled, overall!

You know, on a side note, I saw this article and I thought of you. It made me think of that song you introduced me by The Scared Little Guys. :D
