what do you think Portland Oregon would be like if so many cool people hadn't moved there? when i briefly lived there and every time i've visited there i've found portland to be way too saturated. what if all those cool radical people and all the whatever other people hadn't all moved there and had stayed where they were? wouldn't their original

the same thing is happening to phx, without the massive influx of "cool" people.

really? where? downtown? thankfully i don't that will ever happen here in north phoenix.

there are a lot of good things that would come from cool radical people staying in place, but it sounds pretty stagnant and depressing, too. a whole lot of people are interested in leaving where they're from...

portland was desensitizing when i visited here before. cool hipsters or punks everywhere, who cares? but now that i'm knowing it better i am pretty excited about how many worker-owned businesses there are and programs going on and other stuff. but i think you're right, everybody wants to deny their role in gentrification, maybe because no one seems to know what to do about it.
i like to think people should leave their homes for a while to get inspired and to remember what they should be appreciating where they're from. i think that happened to you when you came here, right?

i got mad at san francisco and portland when i lived in phoenix and everybody left, too.

i always had a pretty high appreciation for Phoenix. i actually didn't come to appreciate portland till i went back to visit. i'm not mad at other cities. i'd love to visit sf or portland! i was going to go visit ashville, north carolina with richard but richard decided not to move there yet. i'm down to check out anywhere. i was just thinking more of the gentrification stuff. that was part of the reason i left the art district area of downtown phoenix. it feels weird down there.

yeah, you were always good about loving the desert, it's true. you taught me to appreciate it too.

visiting asheville sounds fun. it also sounds like something i won't do for many years. did i tell you i met cindy from doris, speaking of asheville? it was one of the more awkward experiences of my life.

I'm living here, seeing it and trying to prevent it.. but believe me when your college educated and the housing market has risen up to a point where the median cost on a home is something like 280,000 and you're trying to get in on a home you may be in a situation to move into a neighborhood where you can buy cheap, upgrade and sell. The last neighborhood in Portland is going through that now and certainly is spreading to other areas outside of Portland.

Gresham is experiencing it in a huge way as is Oregon City, Clackamas and other areas.

It's hard to be in Portland, not be a hipster and not feel like your gentrifying an area when all you want to do is own a home and start a family.

Rock-Hard Place.. not much way to stop it but to keep renting and hope that the bottom falls out of the market like it did in LA back in the 80's and you can get into a home for cheap in an area where it's already happened and not kick some poor family out of their neighborhood.

yeah i remember alberta being like that. what yuppy can resist opening an art gallery in an area with radical clowns! it's just so diverse! i feel like such a good person when i live in areas like that!

i thought it was really ironic how much of the art in the alberta area was either 1) done in styles appopriated from various cultures by white artists or 2) photographs of poor people, usually people of color. "get out of our neighborhood -- thanks for the art inspiration!"
