I think the best that can be done is to give him what information he needs, then give him the time to think it over. Situations like these are not the kind of thing one usually considers, so I would suggest stepping carefully.
What everyone else already said works... although you might not want to get dependent on him for everything. I mean... he is the same age as you after all.
