At 176,887 words for today. Did quite a bit over 1,000. Action scene. Almost to Theine! Getting a lot closer to the end.
Big Problem
I really liked the bolded line in this scene.
As they were nearing the gates to the town a great roar caused the companions to stop in their tracks as the heavy wooden gate was slammed inwards and two broken, bloody bodies that were once guards came to rest a few feet from them. The thing that followed them through the gates was so horrible that Sarah had to fight the urge to scream. It looked like it had been human once, but what it was now was some twisted, misshapen travesty of humanity. And to top matters it was huge as if it were made up of several humans. It looked like a single punch from that thing could shatter a stone wall. Its fists were the size of sledgehammers.
Tortured Experiment
The Sorceror is bringing out the "big guns" now.
“What is that thing?” Sarah breathed, staring in horror as the apparition approached them.
“A golem,” Cain replied softly, eyeing the creature warily.
“H-how do you know?” the former barmaid asked, trying to keep her voice calm and failing.
“It knows itself as such,” the former knight replied, shrugging.
Sarah stared at him in shock. “It’s aware enough?”
Cain’s expression darkened as he drew both katana. “Unfortunately.”
Ninja Cain or Parkour?
Before Momo could respond, he leapt into the air, bringing both katana down into the creature’s chest. Far from discouraging the beast, it seemed to simply enrage it. The golem batted Cain aside with one massive arm as if he were a gnat.
“Cain!” Sarah cried, watching in paralyzed horror as the former knight flew through the air towards one of the town walls. He was able to turn himself around before slamming into the wall, planting his feet on the wall and pushing off to land on the ground, unharmed.
Tranquil Bayn
This is why I love Bayn.
Bayn didn’t even make an attempt at the creature, though his energy scythe may have had more of an effect than the steel blades of Cain’s katana and Bill’s axe. He simply patiently waited for Momo to finish her analysis, his arms folded over his chest as if he were waiting for a weather report rather than a method to kill a giant menace that was bearing down on them.
Zombie, Kind of
I had this scene in mind for a while.
“Got it!” the young construct yelled, as the former knight backed off to reassess the situation. “But you’re not going to like it. It’s like a walking corpse. No normal attacks are going to work on it. You have to destroy it utterly to stop it from moving.”
“What?!” Sarah exclaimed, turning on Momo in shock. “How are we supposed to do that?”
“I’ve got it,” Cain muttered, sheathing the katana in his right hand and charging the golem again. He leapt into the air once more and plunged his other katana into the creature’s right shoulder and hung from that as he closed his eye and held his right hand out, palm facing the golem’s chest.
The golem wasn’t going to have any of this, it grabbed Cain in its massive hand and tried to pull the former knight and his sword away, but Cain just pushed his blade further into the creature’s shoulder as he kept his hand pointed at its chest. The golem changed tactics and began tightening the fist clutching Cain, causing the former knight to grunt in pain, but not swaying him from his course.
Stubborn
This shows how advanced Cain's aether magic has gotten.
Bayn charged forward with his energy scythe and began slicing into the golem’s legs and free arm. The creature kicked out at him, momentarily stopping his attack, but not for long. Bill also began attacking. It did little to deter the golem though and Sarah was horrified to see blood start to trickle down Cain’s chin as he kept his eye squeezed shut and his concentration on his outstretched hand.
“Cain, stop! He’s going to kill you!” Sarah screamed up at him.
Finally a dull, red glow shot from the former knight’s hand into the golem. With a loud boom, the creature exploded shooting Cain quite a distance where he slammed into a wall and collapsed to the ground. He didn’t even stir. Bill and Bayn leapt back as the thing fell to the ground like some grotesque felled tree. Sarah tried not to look at what remained of it as she rushed to Cain’s side.
Humor Despite Pain
I really liked this scene.
“Cain!” she called out to him, shaking his shoulder. “Cain!”
“Please stop shaking me,” the former knight groaned. “At least half of my ribs are broken.”
Sarah slapped his shoulder lightly. “You idiot! You could have died!”
The former knight groaned again, rolling over on his back. “How many times have I heard that?”
“Only as many times as you’ve been an idiot!” Sarah snapped back, but unable to hold back the smile that crossed her face as she saw the look of amusement in his eye.
