One thing that you need to remember is nevert take your eye off him and you need to keep everything off the floor as best you can.
Whenever he is chewing something that he is not suppose to chew use a firm NO and then give him a chew toy preferably a chew bone squeek toys can harm him if he chews the squeeky thing out keep doing that he will get the idea soon and keep doing that until he knows what toys are his .. Merulyn was like that and we were right on top of him.

That's what we're trying to do but he has a bad tendency to stand on his hind legs and pull things we've put up down to his level then go to town on them. It's the "positive distraction" training I read about and we've been working on. It's not to bad since he mostly goes after shoes, socks and paper products (tissues, papertowels, ect). We're pretty good about making sure he can't get to much but it's hard to watch him at all hours since even we have to sleep sometimes!
I'm thinking of perhaps getting him more chewie toys. We've got several now including a kong which we put treats/food into before we go to sleep. Any recomdations on other good ones to get?

I know that feeling can you gate him at night when you go to sleep we did that with Merilyn and he cried a few nights but got the message and went right to sleep. He is testing you to see how far he can get away with things you can also keep him on his lead(leash) when he is starting to get bad and keep him next to you for 5 minutes that is also positive re enforcement

I didn't think of possibly trying the leash/lead thing as an idea. Will have to try that when he begins to get to hyper. Not a half bad idea and it may calm him down a bit to realize he can't run around like a lunatic constantly. We do keep him downstairs while we're asleep (mainly because of working on the housebreaking thing which is pretty much done now). We're slowly working him into going upstairs, a little bit each day but when he gets to out-of-control he goes back downstairs and we puppy gate him down there.
lots and lots and LOTS of chew toys. Then try to keep as much as possible out of his reach. What kind of puppy? Mine is coming up on her 1st birthday and she is just now slowing down on the chewing everything in sight phase. BTW mine is a lab/shepard mix.
