We're thinking now that there was a problem with my alternator after all, in that the backflow from the engine/battery wasn't stopped as it should have been. Dad said that would take a few hours to get hot enough to start smoldering, and the wires that were burned (I looked under the car the other day) were the ones leading to the alternator.

Insurance says it's a "total" for sure. But I might get about three grand for it... ugh.
