A horse is over 14.2 hands high at the whithers and a pony is anything under, accept that which is registered as a miniature horse. one hand is equal to four inches. Meaning that ponies are less than 58 inches at the whithers. There are two registries for miniature horses. One registers horses 38 inches and under and the other registers horses 34 inches and under.

A colt is a male horse that has not matured. This is a male horse under four years old. Sometimes in the west all young horses are referred to as colts but usually they are referred to as colts for males and fillies for females. In some areas you will hear the phrase stud colt for colts that have not been castrated.

Probably more than you wanted to know but hope this is helpful.
