Cherry Blossom Festival

Apr 16, 2007 21:08

The Cherry Blossom Festival is this Saturday in J-town! And as it turns out, my uncle's Taiko group is going to be performing! Thing is, due to the severe lack of funds, I'm not gonna be able to go. But I just wanted to post the info for anyone who did want to go:

Ok - time to toot our own horn! Feel free to send the following to your friends and
families in the Bay Area. (Just cut and paste into your e-mails.) Let's have our own fan
clubs cheering us on! Feel free to add some sentiments of your own, and sign your name.

thanks,
Jeannie

Dear Family and Friends:

As most of you know, I play taiko with Grass Valley Taiko. We have been invited by Grand
Master Seiichi Tanaka of the San Francisco Taiko Dojo to perform at the 40th Annual
Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco's Japantown on Saturday,
April 21, at 12:00 noon, at the Peace Plaza on Post and Buchanan streets.

"This is indeed a great honor," says Sensei Mitzi Garnett, of Grass Valley Taiko. "We have
been putting in extra practices to prepare for our debut in San Francisco. The fact that
Sensei Tanaka has invited us -- as he does only one group a year -- is truly amazing! As
we have been working diligently at honoring and establishing this folk art in our
community in the Sierra Foothills, this invitation by no means should be understated. The
fact is that only one group is invited annually to share the stage at the Peace Plaza - only
one group from around the world -- this year that group is Grass Valley Taiko. In the
past, most groups have been from Japan. This is truly a depiction of our great fortune,
dedication, and hard work!"

The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival is an event-packed weekend (running
April 14 & 15 and April 21 & 22) spotlighting traditional customs and culture that are part
of the rich heritage of Japanese Americans. Traditional Japanese music and dance
performances, visual and martial arts exhibits and demonstrations, taiko drumming, tea
ceremonies, doll and sword exhibits, an arts and crafts fair, and a food bazaar will be
among the many festivities. And, a spectacular two-hour Japanese-style parade will bring
the festival to an exciting close on the afternoon of Sunday, April 22. Most events are free.
Please join us in San Francisco if you can! Visit www.GrassValleyTaiko.com for more
information on the Cherry Blossom Festival and on Grass Valley Taiko and enrollment in
ongoing taiko drumming classes and cultural activities. Sensei Mitzi Garnett may be
reached at info@grassvalleytaiko.com

Hope to see you all there!
