Penelo Cosplay WIP

Ssssoooo, the only project I've really been working on lately (aside from baking) is my Penelo cosplay. And since I'm supposed to be taking progress pictures anyway, I figure I'd might as well share them here! Gonna put this bad boy under a cut 'cause it's kinda picture heavy.

Firstly, here's the image I'm using most for my reference, as it gives an excellent view of front, side, and back.

So, I had a bit of trouble figuring out how I wanted to go about making this costume. I'm still doing a lot of the "planning" on the fly, but basically what I decided on was to make a base blue skinsuit, and then attach the yellow to it and make the brown stuff out of wire and paper mache`, covering it with brown fabric.

I just finished the blue bodysuit part, and I used the instructions from the "Body+Legs" section of this site to make it. By the way, I for the life of me can't remember what exact type of fabric I used, I just remember it was pretty stretchy in one direction, not very stretchy in the other, and maintains its opacity even when stretched. Obviously, I had it so the stretchy direction was horizontal, hahah.

Anyhow, I actually don't have any photos of what it looked like cut out, but Shannon snapped a couple so as soon as I snag those from her I'll edit this post.

Here's what it looked like inside-out after the first round of sewing. I hadn't put the collar or zipper on at this point, and I guess my measurements were a little off because the, uh, butt part was a bit...saggy. I took in the offending bits (the pinned part you see in the photo) and that fixed it right up.

When we went to the fabric store to pick up some extra stuff we'd forgotten about, I was supposed to get some kinda interfacing for my collar. But, not knowing what the hell I was looking for exactly, I chickened out and just bought some felt instead. It seems to work, but it tends to roll up inside the collar because I'm stupid and I didn't sew it in. I'll probably add some tacks later to keep it in place.

I'll be honest, I only read like half the instructions for sewing on the zipper from that site above and then just sorta jumped right in. It seems to work though! I will say, however, I'm VERY glad that material is stretchy. No way in hell I'd be able to get into that thing otherwise. So don't be dumb like me, if you're doing a skinsuit sorta thing like that you'll want the zipper big enough so that it'll fit over your hips and shoulders (i.e. don't be a cheapskate and buy a short zipper, spend the extra $0.25 and get one that'll fit over your ass).

And with that, the base of my costume is done!

Actually having a wearable component of my costume really helps get me psyched to work on the costume more. Gonna try to keep up this momentum and get some more work done, hopefully I'll get the sleeves attached and maybe the yellow cut out by the end of this week!
