Well I think the first movie is Eyes Wide Shut and Mirror Mask is another great movie that obviously features masks. Personally I think the appeal is that the mask can free you without allowing others to connect it to you.

Hahah.. all I can think of is a gig I did about a month ago where I was asked to be an 'erotic mime'... neutral mask and body paint. So unsexy. So hilarious.

Many of the traditional Venetian masks had their roots in the Commedia Del Arte. Each character had their own mask shape. The long nosed masks tended to be the Zanni, or servants, as did Arlechino's (harlequin) checks.

However the Buate, the pointy mask that protruded over the lower part of the face, was an original carnival design and wad designed to allow the wearer to eat and drink, while protecting his identity.

If you google Commedia del Arte and Venetian Masks you will find tons of interesting information.
