seriously though, what should we have expected -- it is the oscars after all! i shall quote my friend heidi from when we were talking about this pre-oscars:
"it's funny. i was watching a show about the oscars on cable -- the ever informative e! channel -- and they were talking about the fact that "crash" is nominated for best picture, saying that it actually has a pretty good chance of winning because "the hollywood community likes films about itself," meaning that because it's set in los angeles, maybe those eligible to vote will have voted for it. i mean, come on, we all know that the oscars aren't always about the person who best deserves the award -- how else can we explain gwyneth paltrow trumping cate blanchett's performance in "elizabeth" or helen hunt's insipid turn in "as good as it gets" beating out judi dench's extraordinary performance in "mrs. brown"? -- or who is artistically deserving, but voting for a film because it's set in los angeles? how idiotic!"

Part of me is happy that the Oscars had the balls to go with the most unlikely to win.
But that part of me is eliminated when the film least likely to win IS THE BIGGEST COMPOST HEAP EVER.
