Black Maria

Last minute this evening a friend called with an extra ticket to opening night of this play, Black Maria, at a small downtown rep. So I went, expecting a pleasant evening and little more. When in fact it was fantastic. Beautifully staged, acted with verve and gravity and poetic grace. Based on the longform poem by Kevin Young, each character ( Read more... )

don't you just love it when things like that work out? i adore theater and don't see enough of it around here, especially since there are tons of local companies that are awesome and not that spendy...

One of my favorite discoveries was this theatre company down at Fort Mason that had pay-what-you-can night on Wednesdays. They only adapted short stories. I saw them do an adaptation of Angela Carter's Fall River Axe Murders and it was fantastic. I think I paid $10 to see it! And I had a beautiful walk around the Marina (not a neighborhood I usually spent any time in!).

Ooh, a link. Not sure if the troupe is still around or not but at least it's something to go on! They were great.
