You know, a vet tech friend on here helped me decide to put Jake to sleep when she mentioned that cats tend to be very stoic in their suffering. She said that they can be in a lot of pain and will not really let you know because they do withdraw some. It might be something to pass on to your parents.

Making that decision is just awful, but sometimes being a good pet parent is knowing when it is time to say goodbye.

And in response to your rant last week:
I subscribe to freecycle in the last two weeks the offers for free momcats/kittens and just kittens have gone through the roof. I would respond to these people to just be responsible pet owners in the first place but it would fall on deaf ears I am sure.
