My father went to the ear doctor this morning and discovered he has some physiological defect that inhibits some sound from being processed.

As in, he is occasionaly physically incapable of listening.   This explains why he can hear a song a hundred times and still think he has never heard it.

Not trying to discredit medical science here but I'm fairly sure that some of the times you've told him something and he claims you never did...well it's not because of his ear thing. because that is far far far too common a problem with parents for such a handy explanation.
