Timothy dismounted Redbird, letting his steed have her head, knowing she won’t go far, and made his way across the cemetery. He walked up to the tomb of his mentor. The great monument that was built before the tomb towered over Timothy, casting him in it’s shadow. “You made a bad choice you know. You entrusted your kingdom to a frighten little boy. Why would you do such a thing?” His voice echoed over the grounds, only the rustling of the wind in the branches answered him.

“I’m not ready. I can’t rule and they know it. The inner council, they know, but they are loyal to you and vow to honor your wish. Why couldn’t you give them the King they deserve?” Tim shakes his head hopelessly, all of his doubts and worries and fears and moments of second guessing rising up making his voice shake.

“You were suppose to teach me how to be a King, to be a man, but you left,” Timothy’s hand curled into fists, but had no one to lash out at but the monument. “You left! You left after you promised you wouldn’t! I needed you … I need you . . and you left me!”

Timothy gulped trying to get rid of lump that formed in his throat, but it only seemed to grow. He squeezed his eyes shut against the tears that were already falling down his cheeks. “I would have gone with you. I would have fought at your side. I would have given my life for yours. I would have died with you … why wouldn’t you even allow that?”

“Because the world isn’t cruel enough to take you both from us,” Timothy turned to see Richard standing behind him, hands clasped behind his back.

Timothy’s legs gave out and he sunk to his knees, without a word Richard went to his side and pulled Timothy in his arms, brushing away the tears. Timothy buried his face in Richard’s shirt. “You would have made a better King.”

“I am a Knight, what do I know of crowns and thrones? No Bruce made the right choice when he picked you as his heir.”

“How can you say that?”

“Because I see what Bruce saw. I see a young man who is devote and true in his words and actions. A light shines in your eyes, a warmth in your voice, it inspires and encourages a man to do great things.”

“I encourage others?” Tim ask, lifting his eyes up to meet Dick’s.

“You encourage me. My King, my liege, my Timothy. I am your Knight now and forever,” Richard whispered before laying a kiss on Timothy’s brow.
