A long time ago, I requested book recommendations because I was working on a project where I was reading through all the books I was supposed to read in school, but didn't ( Read more... )

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
Yes, it's fantasy, but it's also a commentary on the nature of what makes a hero a hero and a legend a legend. It also happens to have the single most powerful scene that I've ever read dealing with what makes performing music so important to those that do.

My favorite novel of the last five years or so.

That sounds like just the type of fantasy novel I've been looking for lately. I'll have to check that out.

Thanks for the recommendation, even though it wasn't really meant for me. :-)

Fair warning, it IS the first of a trilogy, and the second book has yet to be published.

I'm reading the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey (for the 2nd time through, LOL). I LOVE it.

LOVE IT.
Are you re-reading all six? or just the first three? Kushiel's Avatar has got to be on my short list of favorite novels.

A new one (#7) comes out in June, if you didn't know.

i just got the rothfuss book from a friend two days ago! she told me that it was great, too.

i also recently read "ender's game" by orson scott card and can recommend it if you like the sci-fi.

if you want something politicalish, i recommend "confessions of an economic hitman" by john perkins to everyone. also "persepolis" by marjane satrapi.

some poetry? can't go wrong with lucille clifton, i'm just discovering her.

something nature-y? "two in the far north" by margaret murie.

I like Orson Scott Card, I really do.
But you realize he's an evil bastard once you look at some of his statements about homosexuality. I refuse to purchase any of his books anymore. Seriously, it's that bad. Look it up, it'll break your heart.

that is very sad news. not entirely unexpected, i guess, since the ender series seems to devolve from "lord of the flies in space" to "missionaries in space" - and though he does seem to maintain characters like ender who practice higher ethical reasoning outside of religion, i haven't been able to finish the series for this. can i redeem myself by the fact i have never purchased any of his books new and therefore may not have supported him directly (while i was supporting a lovely local business)?
