So, this is fucked up... I've seen Tom Petty twice now, and still have yet to make it through a whole show... only two concerts I've ever left early in my life, and they were both Petty... kind of ironic, actually...
The first time was when I was ten and I went with my parents when Petty was on tour promoting his 'Wildflowers' solo-album (this CD kicks ass, by the way, you should check it out), which just so happened to be two or three weeks after I broke my wrist in a car accident. I mention this because, for the month or so after that accident, I was doped up on painkillers every day. So yes, a ten-year-old taking adult sized doses of different painkillers... he'll be awake and able to stand on his own and everything... /sarcasm.
Ha, I ended up damn near passing out, which lead my mom to panic and insist that everyone leave... my step-dad's friend that was with us was ready to kill me...
So imagine, being murdered when you're completely fucked up on pills... how Kurt Cobain is that?
Fast-forward ten years and we get to last night... Petty was on tour with the Black Crowes, fuck yeah, I was going.
It was shaping up to be a pretty killer night... just hanging out with people I hadn't seen in awhile, a Bubba Kegg full of Newcastle and some hard-lemonade and someone, whom for security purposes I will refer to as T. Langman... err, that's too revealing, how about Tricia L., breaking a Subway bathroom sink.
We got to the concert a little later than I would've liked, ran into some more people I hadn't seen in awhile, and got to catch a lot of the Black Crowes. Still kicking ass... then Petty went on at 9 and played everything from either the Wildflowers or Greatest Hits CD, some Traveling Wilburys and I think he even did an Animals cover... last night was kicking total ass...
Then it happened, keeping up with the tradition of 'It rains at every concert Kyle Brown is at', the storm that had just been chilling to the west of us decided to show up. Right in the middle of a kick-ass acoustic version of 'Learning to Fly,' it started pouring, lightning struck, and the power went out... goddamn it. The power came back on a few seconds later, and Petty, being the hardass he is, kept right on going with the song, even improving lyrics the storms at the end. However, the other people I was with were completely panicking and were sold on the idea of leaving... they headed out to the car, Lisa and I stayed for 'Don't Come Around Here No More' before we had to leave too. I heard that the show was called-off not too much longer after that, but still, damn it.
Just goddamn it, that's twice now that I've had to leave Petty early... third time better be a charm... too bad he doesn't do any indoor venues around here...
Edit: I went to Tom Petty's official website to check the setlist to see how much I missed last night, come to find out, after we left, he played both "Running Down a Dream" and "You Wreck Me," which were two of the main three songs I wanted to hear. Goddamnit. This news has just spun me into a dimension of pissed off that I don't think I've ever achieved...
