I finished the book about 10 days ago and now I can't WAIT to see the movie. I think I may go tomorrow night or Sunday afternoon. The book completely blew me away. I'm very excited :D
The movie is not the book, though it tries really hard to be. I think you'll probably enjoy it. I did, even though some of the changes/diversions from the plot were kind of frustrating.
Good to know. I bought my ticket for the IMAX show at noonish tomorrow.
I think the part of the book that killed me the most was when the police took of Rorschach's mask. The mask was the face I knew, so to see him without it took so much away from the character. I know that was the general idea behind doing it. It was effective. And I really liked just how ambiguous good and evil are in it, too. Everyone does what they do because they honestly believe it's the right thing to do--except the Comedian, of course, which makes for a nice foil to the others.
The guy who plays Rorschach is great in the movie. I derided him a lot early on for doing a Christian Bale Batman impression, but since Rorschach never speaks in any other voice in the movie, it convinces you that he's full of so much hatred that speaking any other way just wouldn't come out right. In the movie, I think Rorschach really becomes great when they unmask him. The actor just looks like he hates everyone and everything in every scene.
I feel like one of the major weaknesses is the ambiguity of good and evil when it comes to Ozymandias. His character lacks a lot of depth because of a scene they left out at the very end. But you'll see what I mean when you watch the movie.
