CALLING ALL CAT EXPERTS

My cat managed to somehow hurt herself yesterday. She's visibly fine, but she's having a lot of trouble walking, mainly when it comes to putting weight on her back legs. It takes her a while to get up once she's been lying down, and once she does start walking, she only goes short distances before flopping down again. More mysteriously, she's ( Read more... )

It's possible she got a bug or spider bite. One summer Zeke, my parents' cat, was doing pretty much what you described, and we noted a lot of ugly spiders in the area (ew). He was okay in a couple of days; we also crushed half an aspirin and put it in his wet food to help with any minor pain or swelling he had. I'd say if she's not okay after the weekend, then call the vet and see what they have to say.

She was out pretty late, so maybe she got bit by something, I dunno. I'm starting to lean more toward the theory that she landed wrong and that coupled with her weight has injured her a little.

Thanks for the advice!

It's hard to say, especially if she isn't showing any signs that she's in pain. The only thing I suggest is keeping an eye on her and see if the problem goes away in a few days. If not, take her to the vet and explain her behavior. It could be anything affecting her walking - her weight as you suggested, her age, or she probably landed funny on her legs.

I hope your cat gets better!

Thanks!

I'm thinking it's probably that last theory - she jumped out of my dad's arms yesterday while he was carrying her inside, so maybe she just landed awkwardly. I'm hoping she'll be hobbling around a little better tomorrow.
