Wherein I mention books

Back in February, I became aware of the "50 books for the year" idea. This idea reduced me to little-girl giggle hysterics. How could I not possibly read at least 50 books in a year? I devour the damned things. So at the time I started a list. I decided I was not allowed to cheat by doing December-December... I had spent Christmas break ( Read more... )

So what did you think of The Island of the Day Before? It's the only one of his that I really had a tough time with, partly because it didn't feel like he'd gotten a very good handle on his driving conceit, and so it was more ... diffuse than usual.

I keep meaning to reread it (I did finish), but it's a tough convincing act.

I really liked it, actually. Partly because the basic idea (a place that is right there but you can't get there because although you can see it, it isn't actually right there, in this case separated metaphorically by time) resonates strongly with me. F.'s Pendulum remains my favorite.

I am in awe of you (picture me prostrate chanting "we're not worthy"...). This is not just for your volume and choices, but for the very fact that your library is organized.

But, the real reason that I'm here: how does one construct stairs which are zombie-proof??

(Btw, re your long commutes, do books-on-tape (or on CD) count?)

Zombie-proof stairs = attic steps that retract up into the attic when the door is shut. Only advanced zombies can handle stairs to start with, but they can manage it eventually. In case of attack, retreat with supplies to the attic, pulling up the stairs behind you. You can always leave via the attic window as a last resort. As long as the outbreak is shortlived, you won't be. =)

I can't imagine not having my library organized. I must be able to find a book at a moments notice. In fact, when I have to re-arrange sections (because a particular genre gets too large for its position in the library), I am deeply disoriented for the next month or so.

I went to a wedding on Signal Mountain above Chattanooga, TN; on the road up the mountain, there is a zombie-resistant house. A Google search finds lots of hits on it, including this video. [Disclaimer -- my computer at work doesn't do sound, so I don't know what the audio track says.] To all appearances, the "front steps" (i.e., the gangplank) are fully retractable! :-)

And, while we're on the subject, I give you this gem. snowdryad's entry from yesterday indirectly put me on this web-comic, Unshelved, and it has been eating my brain, and my day, today ( ... )
