would you say that to most christians, the fear of going to hell motivates good behavior more than a desire to go to heaven? i would never condone a good outcome if it was brought about by fear.

Speaking for myself? I think that the fear of the Lord is the begining of knowledge. I learned of God through my parents and it was my fear of them that kept me paying attention in church. That fear, tempered with knowledge, has become more of a respect though. Now my love of God motivates me. It is a growth process for everyone. Unfortunately some people plateau way too early.
oh and I do not believe in hell in anyway. in my opinion it takes very little studying to find that it is very widely misunderstood. further, from a logical level it just doesnt make sence. nothing done in a single lifetime could posibly justify eternal torment. that could not happen. God would not be just if that was one of the stakes.
