This morningn a McCain surrogate mentioned Obama's use of marijuana and cocaine during youth. This made junkies and potheads very angry and as a result McCain may lose a great percentage of the addict voter

When he said that in August, he was in a forum hosted by Pastor Rick Warren. The audience was filled with people from Warren's church (not entirely intended to be that way, they offered tickets to the church first and ran out before the public could be given the chance or so I've been told).
In all likelihood, his response was an attempt to please his audience of churchgoers (and likely believed life begins at conception). He felt he couldn't answer honestly so he attempted to be philosophical, that his belief didn't matter, only God knows (hence it was 'above his paygrade'). It backfired, clearly.
