laptops are a money sink imho. you cannot easily upgrade them, and if they break, they are more expensive to repair due to proprietary parts.

of course the downside is that you cannot take a desktop with you.

When I was working on my Master's thesis, I bought a laptop because I needed to be able to work in Tacoma and lugging my desktop down from Renton just wasn't an option. Later, when participating in Nanowrimo, I was able to take the laptop to write-ins. It slowly become my exclusive writing computer.

When at my desktop, I find it difficult to concentrate on writing for very long, perhaps because I initially conceived of it as a gaming platform (though it is woefully inadequate for that now). When working on my laptop, though, the problem vanishes. At this point, all I have to do to get into a writing mood is open the laptop. It's useful beyond its abilities as a computer.

Sounds like a good system you've got worked out. Good luck with the writing and with getting the new laptop.
