Exciting Times are Afoot!!!

Ok so since the middle of last year I have been slaving away doing honours, which in my degree is one big research project.  My project has been on the molecular genetics of bovine fatty acid composition, in other words I have been sequencing and genotyping a gene in cattle and seeing if it has variants which cause an effect on fat in meat.

Any way ( Read more... )

I was considering a PhD and was told by my advisers that it is a minimum of 4 years. Then, after that there's the whole post-doc thing for another 2-4 years. That's why I'm not really considering it anymore. I also find research pretty tedious. However, if you enjoy learning, I totally say go for it :) Molecular genetics of bovine fatty acid composition sounds pretty damn awesome :)

I think the length of a Phd depends on the area and university (not sure though). I do know a lot of people take more then 3 years to finish it but the scholarship is for three years and it can be done in that time. If I did a PhD it would be in chicken health and their gastrointestinal tract. I know completely different topic but it will give me the chance to learn new techniques (in genetics I pretty much learn how to pipette to perfection). So even if I dont like chickens by the end of the PhD I will have learnt histology, immunology and so many other techniques. I want to expand my knowledge of other technique too somewhere they wont be all "you should know this". So PhD is the way to go for me! Plus it means I dont have to move house again for a while (unless I decide to move off campus, which sometimes I do but it depends on my mood) and I have a social life here and in adelaide which may have to stop as most jobs are interstate or overseas. I dont mind moving and starting again but for now I'm happy and its the happiest ( ... )

That sounds like awesome news about your honours project. It's great that it has all come together when you were so worried about it early on. Good luck with finishing it all off!

Thanks! My supervisor has decided I am now to do one tiny bit of lab work (which will take about 4hrs) just to make sure my data is accurate and then its truely done with lab work. All I have to do now is the writing which is my worst part!!!

Holy Cow! (pun oh so intended)

That is so cool! At least if you can get something published, it sets you up really well for either phd or a job. :D Not that I want you to run away interstate/overseas with a job just yet... I'd miss you!

Also, don't sell yourself short in terms of your work ethic. I think you work harder than many of the vetties (yours truly included).

Very Exciting though! XX
