Character Name: Astrid Hofferson
Series: How to Train Your Dragon (2010 Film)
Timeline: From a little past mid-movie, when she runs into Hiccup in the forest as she's training
Background:
Her Wiki entry can be found here! What little headcanon I have put here is marked in blue.
Astrid was born on Berk. Berk is a charming little island inhabited by a stubborn lot of Vikings and has a bit of a pest problem. The pest problem, of course, being dragons. She has grown up immersed in this culture, and her personality reflects it. Unfortunately, as Hiccup is the focus of the film, Astrid's background lies largely unexplored. Looking at the Viking culture, you can understand the mores and social norms that she upholds with remarkable pride.
Within the film, she's been helping out the other teenagers put out fires around the village while the adults all fight when she (along with Hiccup and the teens) is put into Dragon Training-- basically, where you go to learn to kill dragons. This is exactly what she's been wanting and shows remarkable skill right off the bat, thinking quicker on her feet than the others and absorbing the information like a sponge. In all likelihood she has probably trained at some point before the film, judging by her incredible skill-- she even tells Hiccup, referring to his sudden acquisition of talent late in the film that "you don't just get that good overnight", carrying the implication that she's been training for a while. However, as the training continues, she starts to notice that Hiccup is inexplicably VERY GOOD at handling the dragons, when he spent most of his time running away screaming or being generally useless. She becomes suspicious and tries to follow him... and that's about the time I've taken her from.
Personality: Astrid is a perfect example of the typical Viking. She is stubborn as all get out and determined to a fault. If she wants to know something, she's going to find out if she has to beat it out of you. Her dream is to become a true Viking Warrior.
Astrid is a total type A tsundere, but she's not outright rude-- she'll socialize, to some extent. She would MUCH rather be training and killing dragons than hanging out with kids her age. She's frustrated easily when people (read: Hiccup) succeed at things without trying-- hard work is VERY important. She's very smart, but her stubbornness can hold her back. To change Astrid's opinion is very much like moving a boulder-- it must be done quickly, violently and with great force. For example, having your pet dragon scoop her up and drop her in a tree with no apparent way down other than giving you a chance to talk is generally the most accepted way to get her to do much of anything she doesn't agree with. She has the potential for great change and a much wider world view than she exhibits, but she's never been given a reason to think differently, at least in the point in the film she's from. As it is, she takes everything as a Viking she's been taught as The Truth (ESPECIALLY about dragons), though the information is somewhat uninformed. She sees everything as very black-and-white: Dragons are evil. Vikings are good. Hiccup is an idiot. These are the universal truths, as she sees them, this moment, when she's brought aboard the Elegante.
Appearance: Astrid is a lithe little thing, a veritable twig in a community of human mountains. In spite of this, she's remarkably athletic. Her size and skinny arms don't suggest her proclivity for fighting, they don't let on that she can swing a fifteen-something-pound axe at your head with very little problem. She's blonde, always wears her hair in a braid, and, at the age of fifteen, she thinks that wearing her bangs in her face is a wise fashion choice. (I did at the time, too.)
Spoken / written languages: Common/Written Nordic Runes like Hiccup reads.
Abilities: Astrid's a strong girl, but not absurdly so. She can lift a damn heavy axe and hold her own in a fight-- she's smart, cunning and quick on her feet. She can come up with and implement battle strategies based, oftentimes, on information given to her, but she is more than capable of thorough observation.
Items: Since...
most of her outfit can be considered a weapon... um, she'll be showing up wearing a.... less pointy version of her skirt. Her shoulder armor will just be... dulled down. Other than that, she'll be wearing all of her normal stuff, and will not have the axe that she was using when she was ported to the boat.
Third Person Sample: Kill on sight.
That’s what frustrated Astrid more than anything, running through the hills and valleys of Berk, carrying a knife under her belt and a bucket of water in her hands. The Dragon Manual said kill on sight after every entry, no exceptions.
Well, except for one, but you couldn’t actually catch a Night Fury, that was impossible. And it was beside the point- they were supposed to Kill On Sight, but you couldn’t really be of any help or effective in any way if you hadn’t done Dragon Training yet.
And besides, against an entire burning house, what were five pails of water going to do anyway? She has to shake herself out of her thoughts sooner or later-pondering killing dragons is all well and good… when one is not in the middle of a raid. Fortunately, someone screaming her name was around to help her with that.
“Astrid!”
Oh, Gods. That voice. Astrid threw the rest of the contents of her bucket on a flame and didn’t bother to turn, she knew the source of the voice-Snotlout, definitely Snotlout-would come find her sooner or later.
“Astrid, did anyone ever tell you-“ And here he was, with the sound of some house collapsing nearby drowning out most of whatever she had never been told before, “-on fire?”
She turned, raising an eyebrow, in an attempt to not give him too much to work with. He just laughed and swatted at the air. “Come on,” He said, assuming she had in fact liked whatever complement he’d just spat out, “There’s another fire down the hill we might be able to stop. You know, together.”
But Astrid was already looking above Snotlout’s horned helmet, to the cliff high above. A Monstrous Nightmare was making its way up-hadn’t that one been out already?
“We have better things to do. Go find Stoick.” Her voice was calm, almost bored, and it surprised her, just a little bit. “That Nightmare’s going to give us problems.”
And besides, against an entire burning house, what were five pails of water going to do anyway? Better to send Snotlout off on some task that might actually keep someone alive.
When Gobber gathered them all up a few days after the raid, she dared to get her hopes up, just a little. Watching him pace back and forth in front of the tables in the dining hall, Astrid and the other four teens all waited with bated breath and raised eyebrows, skeptical of what they could be told.
“Al’right. Th’lot of you,” Gobber said, finally hobbling to a bench. “Are going to start Dragon Training. In the morning. Y’got that? Wear somethin’ y’don’t mind catchin’ on fire or nothin’.”
Astrid couldn’t really fight the smile off of her face.
Finally.
First Person Sample: I have a request.
[The Viking girl sounds remarkably earnest, considering she's spent the past week calling Certain Other Vikings crazy. There's the sound of metal grating metal in the background as she talks.]
I'm looking for a sparring partner. [Scrrrrape.] If you've found anything that passes for a weapon, that's more than welcome. [Scrrrrape.] If you don't have a weapon, I won't use one. [Scrrrrrape.] Don't think I'm going to go easy on you, though.
[There's a clunk of her setting something aside-- it sounds heavy. It couldn't be her axe, though, considering all weapons were confiscated.]
Hm. Seems sharp enough.
[There's a small click as the feed cuts out.]
Preferred Quarters: Deck 6, Room 7340, if possible?
