Penalty kicks are the worst way to lose (or win, for that matter) a game. The 2nd string Argentine will get a lot of shit for not saving any of the shots, but a) keepers aren't actually expected to save any of the shots and the pressure is entirely on the field players not to choke and b) the 1st string Argentine is really not that hot anyway. He is erratic and comes way too far out of the goal too early, too often. Like, for example, in the play where he got injured.
What I really want to know, and what the (U.S.) media seem to be downplaying, is: what was that quasi-fight at the end of the game? Seriously now.
Yeah, it makes the outcome nearly random, or if not random then a consequence of factors only loosely related to the abilities and strategies of the teams. So it goes. I sort of disagree about a), though, since Lehman guessed correctly on almost all of the penalty shots he saw, even when he couldn't stop them. Shooter fatigue or no, credit due.
That said, the only other time I saw Argentina play, which was when they walloped Cote D'Ivoire, their goalie did nothing so I can't claim to be an expert on Argentine goalies.
According to ESPN, the fight happened because a German assistant coach stepped on an Argentinian player's foot.
The warlords in Cote D'Ivoire's civil war called a temporary truce during the world cup. Their top man is Didier Drogba, positively explosive.
Penalty kicks are the worst way to end a game... like a really drawn out way of flipping a coin. I think, though they will never do this, that FIFA should allow a single sub for each overtime period and keep playing.
Cote D'Ivoire were amazing to watch. Their match against the netherlands has been one of my favorites of the cup. Also, they used the world cup to plead with the warlords to stop the fighting for good.
What about Rooney's crotch stompin' this afternoon?
