Jonghyun was six when he broke his leg.

“Jonghyun, you shouldn’t do that!” Jinki whined, tugging on Jonghyun’s shoe as he jumped onto the trunk of the tree.

Jonghyun laughed and shook Jinki’s grip from his shoe. He climbed higher up the tree, swinging from branch to branch like a monkey in a zoo. “You should join me, the view is great!”

Jinki frowned as his eyes followed Jonghyun up the tree, shielding his view from the bright sunlight when Jonghyun climbed up too high. “Ok, that’s high enough! You should come down now, it’s getting late!” He yelled, spurting out every reason he could think of for Jonghyun to just get out of the tree.

The wind carried Jonghyun’s laughter down the tree. “You’re missing out,” he sang, clutching the bark on the trunk tightly as he wondered what would be the best way to reach the next branch.

“Please!” Jinki shouted. “Jonghyun, come down! I’m scared!” Jinki’s eyes welled up with tears, threatening to overflow as Jonghyun’s laughter rang from above once again.

“Why are you scared?” Jonghyun jumped from his branch and Jinki’s heart stopped as he soared in the air for, what seemed like an eternity. “You’re not the one playing the tree!” Jonghyun said, his fingers curling around the branch and latching on tightly as it bobbed from the sudden added weight.

“Jonghyun, please. You’re going to die if you fall!” Jinki squirmed on the ground, unsure of what to do. “If you don’t come down... I’ll -- I’ll tell!”

Jonghyun gave a heavy sigh. “Fine.” He said, swinging himself up onto the branch he had jumped to. “Just let me get to the top branch first.” He stretched his arms to reach for the next branch, his feet shifting carefully in order to get a good footing on the branch he was standing on. Jonghyun frowned in frustration as he reached further, struggling to wrap his little fingers around the wood.

Giving out a cry of success as he finally grasped the branch, he heard Jinki whining from below. “Calm down, I’ll be --”

Jonghyun’s heart pounded in his chest as he heard a deafening crack. The next thing he knew, the bough he was so eager to hold on to moments before was slipping out of his grasp and moving further and further away, all the branches he had used to hoist himself higher were flying past his face, and somebody was screaming.

When Jonghyun hit the ground, he heard another sickening crack before feeling a sharp pain in his left leg. He bit back a cry of pain as he looked up at Jinki’s horror-stricken face, his mouth still agape as he continued to scream.

It was then at Jonghyun realized that he enjoyed the feeling of being in danger.

“Here,” Jonghyun said, holding out a bottle for Jinki to take, “try some.” Squirming in his place on the kitchen floor, in front of his father’s (previously locked) cabinet.

Jonghyun had called Jinki over to “show him something”. Jinki rushed over instantly, he recognized the tone of Jonghyun’s voice to be nothing but trouble, and he didn’t want to his friend to do something stupid without supervision.

Jinki eyed the unmarked bottle curiously, knowing that nothing good would come from taking the bottle without an explanation. “What’s in it?”

Jonghyun rolled his eyes and shoved the bottle at Jinki’s face. “Just try some. You know I wouldn’t give you anything dangerous.” Jonghyun’s breath smelt foul but Jinki wasn’t able to recognize the scent.

Jinki frowned, still obviously uneasy, but took the bottle regardless. “I don’t know about this, Jonghyun... Are you sure it’s safe?”

Jonghyun nodded enthusiastically and forced the bottle to Jinki’s lips. “Just, try some. I swear you’ll like it.” Without waiting for a response, Jonghyun tilted the base of the bottle up, allowing the mystery liquid to slide into Jinki’s mouth (but mostly just down his chin).

“What the hell is this?” Jinki choked, pulling the bottle away from his lips as he coughed violently. His throat felt like it was on fire and, if Jonghyun didn’t start explaining, Jinki would assume that his best friend had just tried to poison him.

Snatching the bottle away from Jinki, Jonghyun frowned. “It’s soju. Don’t you like it?” He swirled the drink in the bottle before taking a sip of his own, swallowing it easily.

Jinki’s eyes widened in shock, “Jonghyun, stop!” He swatted at Jonghyun’s hands, forcing him to pull the bottle away from his mouth. “You can’t drink that! You’re underage!”

“Don’t be such a spoilsport.” Jonghyun scoffed, shoving Jinki away before taking another long sip. “You should taste it again, I swear it’s better the second time.”

“I don’t want to try it again.” Jinki snapped, struggling to pull the bottle away from Jonghyun. “Let go, Jonghyun. You shouldn’t be drinking this.”

Jonghyun stood up, taking another swig of the drink before stumbling into the living room. “Jinki, why don’t you let yourself have any fun?”

“Fun, Jonghyun, is not getting sick and partaking in illegal activities.” Jinki said, scrambling after Jonghyun.

“I’ll admit,” Jonghyun started, falling onto the couch to avoid Jinki, “the first time I got drunk, I was a little scared.”

Jinki’s eyes widened in shock. “You’ve already gotten drunk once before?” He asked, abashed.

Jonghyun nodded, “It was scary. First, everything went a little fuzzy at the edges.” He blinked hard and gestured vaguely with his hands, “Like, when you wear someone else’s glasses. Like that.”

Jinki grabbed at the bottle but Jonghyun’s grip was too strong. “Then, you feel a little dizzy, but it’s a good kind of dizzy.”

“Stop, Jonghyun. I can’t let you drink this anymore.” Jinki said, ignoring Jonghyun’s story completely.

“It’s nice, Jinki.” He said, allowing his eyes to slide closed. “You’d like it too, if you experi -- well, you know.” Jonghyun said, his words slurring together. He slowly opened his eyes and smiled lazily up at Jinki.

Jinki pulled the bottle away from Jonghyun violently, spilling some of the liquid onto Jonghyun’s carpet. “Thats it, Jonghyun. I’m not letting you have anymore.”

Jonghyun frowned, sitting up at clutching at Jinki’s shirt loosely. “Jinki, can I just have one last sip? Then -- then I’ll quit for good, I promise.”

He didn’t want to hand the bottle over, really, but some part of him believed what Jonghyun was saying. The next thing Jinki knew, Jonghyun’s head was thrown back and he was chugging the remaining contents of the bottle.

“Jonghyun -- no!” Jinki hit the bottle away from Jonghyun’s mouth, sending it flying across the room and into a nearby book shelf. He grabbed at Jonghyun’s shoulders, shaking him hard. “Are you stupid? You can’t just drink it like that!”

Jonghyun’s head flew back and forth limply as Jinki shook him. His hands trembled as he reached for Jinki’s arms, willing him to stop. “Jinki,” he mumbled, thankful when Jinki stopped shaking him, “I feel sick.” He said, his breathing slowing to a irregular pace. All the color had drained from Jonghyun’s face and he felt as if his stomach was trying to claw its way out of his body.

Jinki’s eyes widened in concern, “Jonghyun, oh my god, I need to get you to a hospital.”

Jonghyun shook his head, holding onto Jinki tighter. “No, please, I don’t want my dad to know.” He took in a shaky breath before his stomach began to clench -- hard. Jonghyun barely had time to turn his head before he puked against the side of Jinki’s pants.

Jonghyun was fifteen when he got alcohol poisoning.

“Guess who just passed their driving test!” Jonghyun sang, waving a set of car keys in front of Jinki’s face.

Jinki gaped in awe, “Are you serious? I thought you’d fail for sure!”

Jonghyun’s joyous expression turned quickly into a sharp frown. “Hey, don’t be nasty.” He sidestepped around Jinki, basically skipping away. “If you keep that attitude up, I won’t be giving you a ride in my car.”

“Thank god,” he mumbled, laughing loudly when Jonghyun chucked his keys at him. Jinki caught the keys clumsily, looking at Jonghyun in confusion. “Why did you throw these at me? Don’t you need them to drive.”

Jonghyun paused. “... Right.” He stormed back to Jinki’s side, snatching the keys from his hands. “It’s just, I didn’t want to hurt you by throwing a rock.”

“So you thought a jagged-edged key was a better alternative?”

Jonghyun’s face reddened in anger. “Whatever. Shut up. I hate you.” He shook his head and sharply turned away, crossing his arms childishly as he walked towards his car. “I knew introducing you to Kibum was a bad idea, you’re starting to act like him now.” He yelled as he jumped into the drivers seat of his car, a fancy convertible his rich daddy bought.

Jinki frowned as Jonghyun revved his engine, “Hey, wait a second!” He shouted, running towards the car as Jonghyun pulled out of his parking space. “I feel like I should come with you.” He said, struggling with opening the door before Jonghyun unlocked it.

“Why’s that?”

Jinki shrugged, buckling himself in safely. “I feel like you’re going to do something stupid.”

Jonghyun tore out of the parking lot, driving down the street at an impossibly fast speed, and accelerating with every passing second.

Jinki gripped the edge of the seat tightly, bracing himself against the leather coated seats. “Jonghyun, slow down!” Jonghyun replied by going even faster. “I’m serious!”

Jonghyun’s eyes shifted towards Jinki’s for a brief second -- “Keep your eyes on the road!” -- smirking devilishly as he easily roared around a corner, Jinki’s body sliding against the door of the car as he did so.

“Isn’t this fun?” He yelled, feeling the adrenaline pumping through his veins, realizing that if he made just one wrong move, they’d both be dead.

Jinki stared at him in horror. “Are you kidding?!”

Jinki turned quickly to look at the road, feeling his blood turn cold as the traffic light in front of them turned from green to yellow. “Jonghyun, stop.” He said sternly, a heavy feeling of dread overcoming him as Jonghyun continued to speed towards the light.

“Jonghyun!” He yelled, eyes widening further as the light changed to red. “Please, stop!” Jinki looked back at Jonghyun, watching Jonghyun as he decided what to do. Listen to Jinki, his voice of reason; or keep going, and feel what it’s really like to escape death?

He turned to look at Jinki one last time, noticing the similarities between his current fear-stricken expression to the one he had when Jonghyun broke his leg. Frowning, Jonghyun slammed hard on the brakes, stopping a little too close to a passing car for comfort.

Jinki let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, his heart pounding hard in response to the loud blare of the horn of the passing cars.

Jonghyun was nineteen when he almost killed himself and Jinki.

Jonghyun was twenty when he decided to go cliff-diving.

“I come here sometimes,” Jonghyun started, standing at the edge of the cliff and looking down at the ocean, “when I need to think, or, whatever.” He shrugged and turned around, checking to see if Jinki was still there.

“You’re awfully quiet today,” Jonghyun said, frowning. “What’s wrong?”

Jinki winced as Jonghyun walked closer to him, taking a few steps backwards. “I know what you’re planning, and I don’t like it.”

Jonghyun tilted his head to the side. “Why?” He asked, genuinely curious.

Jinki threw his hands up in the air, frustrated. “You’re so stupid!” He yelled, Jonghyun’s eyes widening in shock from the sudden outburst. “You do all these... stupid things and you make me suffer by watching you!” Jinki huffed, “I care a lot about you, Jonghyun. You know I hate watching you do all these things.”

“But everyone needs to take a ride on the wild side --”

“Don’t you think you’ve spent enough time on the wild side?” Jinki interrupted, sending Jonghyun a sad look.

Jonghyun laughed, slapping his hands against Jinki’s cheeks and pulling Jinki’s face close to his own, feeling Jinki’s harsh breath on his skin. “Clean living is less fun, and you wind up feeling stupid when you still die.” He said simply, smiling at Jinki’s unamused expression.

“Jonghyun, I don’t think you quite understand what you’re doing. You could die.” He said, his speech distorted from Jonghyun’s hold on his face.

His smile only grew larger. “You can die from just about everything these days.” He brought his face closer to Jinki’s, enjoying the way his heart was pounding in his chest. “Might as well have fun dying, don’t you think?”

“No.” Jinki replied sharply, blinking at Jonghyun’s joyous grin.

Jonghyun laughed. “You’ve always been the right to my wrong, Jinki.” He pressed his lips hard against Jinki’s, loving the way his heart soared from the feeling, more adrenaline running through his veins than any other stunt he had ever attempted.

He pulled away slowly, letting his arms fall back down to his sides as he took two steps backwards. “I’ve always loved making you worry,” he confessed, raising his arms up and allowing the wind to blow beneath them.

“Jonghyun, don’t -- don’t be stupid.” Jinki stammered, fingers lightly brushing his lips.

Jonghyun smiled. “Sorry.”

He allowed his body to fall back into the open air. He couldn’t help but feel nostalgic, watching as the edge of the cliff moved further and further away from him. The soft breeze of the ocean pushing against his back was exhilarating and just when he thought it couldn’t get any better, his body hit the ocean.

Jinki panicked and ran towards the cliff, careful not to fall into the ocean himself. He peered over the edge, staring down at the waves as they lapped against the bed of rocks.

“Please, Jonghyun,” he murmured, his eyes welling with tears, “come up for air.”
