[It's a two-for-one special when the feed begins. The face in front belongs to a young man with dirty blond hair, aquiline nose and perfect jawline. And he seems to be shirtless.]

[The face peeking over his shoulder looks to be around the same age with dark hair and pale skin. Mostly ears and cheekbones beyond that. He's still stuck in one of ( Read more... )

[That has got to be one of the more fascinating calls for help he's heard across the data pad since he arrived here.

Sitting up and looking at the mixed matched pair, Charles can't help chuckling at them.]

Prince Arthur of where?

Camelot.

[ people seem to be asking that a lot. ]

[He knows the feeling, in a manner of speaking.

For now, however, he's gaping at you.]

Seriously? Round table, Excalibur, Lady of the Lake and the lot?

I used a round table once. What's an Excalibur?

Ah, yes. I'm afraid its rather new to me as I've only just arrived but from what I can gather, people who would know you as their past, can be from quite some time in your future.

That makes absolutely no sense.

[ but it does explain a lot. ]

Well ... I can't say that I disagree with you but it is a very fascinating concept, one that deserves further exploration. [Sorry Arthur, you're talking to a geek.] But that doesn't help you with your clothes or situation.

I found that the 'droid' they call it should be able to help you out with your clothing. As for answers to why we're here those can be a little less straight forward I'm afraid.

Aren't they always?

I've gathered we're not returning for Camelot any time soon. Tell me more about how so many people know me.

[ He's just going to use you like Geoffrey of Monmouth, Charles. ]

[Charles gives a wry chuckle and just barely manages to reel in giving Arthur the full pedigree of just how many different versions of his myth exist.]

Well, how best to put this, its not known as the 'Arthurian Legends' just because that sounds cool. There are quite a few interpretations, a wide variety of histories, though the outcome remains distressingly the same.

[Open mouth, inset foot. Charles is a master of the art, he could probably teach a class.]

Arthurian legend, eh? Well!

[ he's torn between ego and embarrassment that people have read about his life in books. ]

And how does it all turn out? Arthur sacrifices himself to close the veil between the worlds and Agrivaine becomes the new king of Camelot?

[ gallows humor. ]

Hey that worked .. I actually got this tag! excessivehubris October 15 2011, 01:33:45 UTC
[Charles makes a face and quirks a corner of his mouth.]

Its all together possible, that that's one version. However, since you were comparing me to Geoffrey of Monmouth, I'll give you his.

[He takes a moment to dig around in his memory for the exact wording from wikipedia Historia Regum Britanniae and then recites as if a teacher at a blackboard.]After twelve years of peace, you set out to expand your empire once more, taking control of Norway, Denmark and Gaul. Gaul is still held by the Roman Empire when it is conquered, and your victory naturally leads to a further confrontation between your empire and Rome ( ... )

How did you know I-

[ But Charles referencing his internal comparison to Camelot's court historian, librarian and geniologist pales, pales compared to what comes next. Arthur reels like he's being struck a dozen blows. ]

[ ... twelve years of peace ... ]

[ Camelot has barely seen twelve years of peace, even after Uther's purges, even having treated with the surrounding kingdoms. And what there had been seemed hopeless to recover, slipping through his fingers with Morgana's machinations, the movements of the Druids, and the strife across the border at Cendred's fall. ]

[ ... defeat the Roman emporer ... ]

[ Arthur learned strategy at the knee of the greats, poring over books by Greeks and Romans - he wasn't much for light reading, but he'd studied well, tactics and geography and political machinations, a literary education to match his physical one. He'd dreamed of Athens, as a boy, and the Holy Roman Empire, but there are not many reasons for a prince to travel. ]

[ ... your wife Guinevere ... ]

[ This one burns through him and ( ... )

[Charles clears his throat and glances aside with a hint of a demure blush as he gets the full force of Arthur's reaction to the news about his queen.]

Yes, well ... as I said, that's just one of many different versions, though Guinevere is almost universally your queen in all of them and regardless of how you come to it, you are regarded as one of the greatest kings of your realm.

Round table, quite the progressive thinking, more inclusive of the men who stand with you.

Yeah.

[ whoops you broke him. he's still just going over the same things in his head &mash; there's pride, and disbelief, and a deep, ugly insecurity that this is a mistake, he will never amount to the man that legend has these people expecting. ]
