[Interesting. A little bit of datapad leg work confirms that this man is in fact Claire's father and he's also discussing Bellatrix. Color Charles nosy curious.]
Senator Petrelli? I apologize for the unsolicited response, I've merely heard about you since I arrived and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Charles Xavier.
[For all the things he could be known for, that was fairly innocuous and Charles would play it to the hilt. Smiling broadly, he nodded.]
Yes, yes I found myself a little confused as to some salient points when I first arrived and found the library quite helpful.
[As he talks, Charles' fingers lift up to rest casually against his temple. He'd been wanting a shot at this man's mind since he'd last spoken with Claire. Just a nice bit of casual small talk and ... lets see what we can suss out, shall we?]
[ooc: As always, permission to you on how far he gets. :)]

[Nathan figures it probably was, but he'd taken a much more people-centered approach when he'd arrived here and needed to do some research. And while understanding the climate of the war had been important - and knowing who Revan was so he could appropriately counter claims that the Outworlders were involved with him - there was still a lot of the Jedi/Sith stuff he just never cared that much about. He was afraid of showing too much interest in it, considering the way Force sensitivity was treated by some Senators here the same way powers were back home - with suspicion]
Does the Snoopy Dance of glee!excessivehubrisOctober 31 2011, 22:39:33 UTC
[Charles can hardly judge the man for his caution, given how cautious he's being himself about his abilities, though Charles can not agree with isolating themselves from understanding what lays at the core root of the problem. The Jedi/Sith conflicts.
Just skimming along here, don't mind him, keeping think Nathan now there's a good chap.]
Well put it down to my academic side. I was a professor of genetics back home so researching is rather second nature if I have a question.
Though people were quite supportive when I first arrived, your daughter Claire, yes? She was very kind in giving me a brief run down on where we were and who to ask for help. It would seem that for the most part, the Outworlders have fashioned themselves a very supportive network, is this your doing, Senator?
[A Professor of Genetics? Nathan wonders if he's talked to Mohinder, and he has a passing thought that there's an inherent danger in a genetics professor spending too much time talking to his daughter, all things considered. Which is a ridiculous thought: just because they talk doesn't mean he's going to ask to examine her DNA.
Then again, apparently Claire's not great at keeping things quiet around here. He's got to talk to her about blabbing to every person who shows up on this thing. Some of them are dangerous.] Yeah, Claire's my daughter. She likes to help out where she can. Sweet kid.
I'd like to take what credit for it I could, but a lot of it's the kind of camaraderie that comes out of being thrust together into circumstances like these. [And seeing how few of them actually support him, he's not gonna count himself in that 'support web'.] My concerns lie more in making sure we've got our rights and our voice while we're here.
[Tempting as it may be to simply suggest to Nathan that Charles is no threat, its not a course of action he pursues unless pushed to it. Instead, Charles arranges his features and body language to project an air of innocuous affability. Nothing to see here, Senator, just a harmless little academic.]
You must be very proud of her, Senator, she seems quite exceptional. [The good Senator really is paranoid about Claire's abilities. Charles wings back gently across Nathan's mind to see if he can determine if this is simply the protective instincts of a father or something more.]
The Galactic Senate has been welcoming of your input? It is comforting to hear that we may have a diplomatic channel through which to be heard, rather than having to resort to violence.
[Seeing if he can stir up a few thoughts from the man regarding how he approaches a potential threat.]
['Exceptional'. If he only knew, Nathan can't help but think wryly, just how 'exceptional' she really is. But this is exactly what he was afraid of her in her sticking her neck out into everyone's business here. Some of them are going to start wondering if there's more to her, and there are already people here who know about her ability. What if the Sith decided to set their sights on her? Especially since that Draco kid she's dating used to be one of them... If they're watching him, she could end up in the cross fire.
She already had, once. He winces at the memory.
She's not invincible, here. She can die. Which means he has to protect her.]
Welcoming's a strong word. [He lets some humor work into his tone, trying to plaster on a smile. It'd taken blood, sweat, and tears to get any of them to do more than laugh at him half the time, and it was an uphill battle still. He had a feeling it always would be.] But we're making strides, one step at a time.
[Well, Charles can certainly share the concern over the Sith getting hold of powers, he feels the same concern where Erik is concerned. But there is a painful difference between protecting and smothering.
Okay anything about Sylar in here while we're peeking about?]
It sounds like a noble endeavor, Senator. If you don't mind the question, how do you feel the Galactic Senate matches up to the political climate you came from? From the outside, I have to admit, it seems less than effective against threats.
[Not much of anything at all, really. Back home Nathan hasn't really gotten involved with Sylar yet, so all he knows is what his daughter's told him here, about what a danger he is, and how he went after her a couple weeks ago. They haven't had a lot of luck gathering evidence against him, however, and he's problematically managed to flee the planet in the interim.]
Considering it's a governing body composed of hundreds and hundreds of cultures ... are you really surprised to hear it's hard to get everyone to agree on one course of action? These people all have their own separate creeds, and they're all their own worlds and economies. Each one is thinking about its own people, and for some of them, being a member of the 'Republic' is more a question of security and finances than any sort of patriotism to the Republic itself.
[Ah! That helps answer why he hasn't been able to find any hint of this Sylar around lately. Okay, shelve that for now and lets ... come back to you, Senator. What is it about yourself that you're hiding?
Outwardly, Charles gave a sympathetic chuckle.]
You should be commended for even being willing to wade into such a morass, Senator! Though if it is allowable, I think I would like to come sit in on a session? Just to learn a little more about the different cultures and how this Senate works?
[Hundreds and hundreds of cultures represented ... talk about a potential smorgasbord of information for a nosy telepath!]
I'm sure that could be arranged. You can even come sit in my box, if you'd like, as a guest. Or platform, I suppose. The Senate Building's quite a sight from the inside, though I'm sure you've seen it on the holovids. Not quite the same as up close and personal. [And here's where Nathan's mind gets a little murkier. It's obvious he tries to protect even himself from whatever his secret is - he doesn't like to admit it's a part of him, whatever it is, and he's mentally dedicated to keeping it buried. But there's obviously some connection to his brother and Claire there, and it doesn't take a huge leap of logic to guess how...]
[Charles briefly pondered nudging a little further but concern over just how sensitive Nathan might prove to be against such invasion backed him off. Instead, he filed away the impression that the man was 'more than' and drew himself back shallow.
He smiled at the idea of being able to attend the Senate and bowed his head in a gesture of gratitude.]
Thank you, Senator, I would very much like to attend on a day it would be convenient for you?
[He actually hadn't seen any holovids of the actual proceedings, merely read up on the debates and the outcomes. The chance to actual sit in, had Charles almost squirming with anticipation. Talking to the Senator was proving to be enlightening, on a number of levels.]
We have some proceedings coming up in the next few weeks that might be interesting for you. I'll talk to Lindsey about it, and he'll work on the arrangements.
I'm just glad to see other people taking a political interest.
