Yo peeps, emerging from my self-inflicted exile to offer an article on the notorious six strikes rule about to be (or maybe already) implemented by the larger ISPs.

HTG Explains: What is the New Copyright Alert System and How Does it Affect You?Carefully read, rather than skimmed, it's pretty informative ( Read more... )

Ugh. I still hate the MPAA/RIAA. I'm glad that I've been making screencaps from my own DVD recordings - I'm way too paranoid to download anything anymore. According to that article, it sounds like almost every ISP (or at least the most common ones) are involved in this. I never got involved with torrents, but I'd download episodes from sites like netload.in, fileserve, etc. I'm guessing they probably monitor those sites too? Wasn't mentioned that I could see, but again I'm paranoid lol.

Anyway it's good to hear from ya :) I was wondering how you were doing. I've been going crazy with work this week myself. Our FEMA rep is quite a charming guy (*said with extreme sarcasm*) so it's interesting. Luckily I'm not the only one who's annoyed with him.

Sorry to hear you were sick, hope you're feeling better now!

Hey Jess, yes I'm better hallelujah! ;)

Actually the article does mention downloading from file servers in the section:

What The Program Doesn’t Target

While the system is branded as a “Copyright Alert System,” it actually only targets people downloading infringing content from public BitTorrent trackers. Both hardcore pirates and casual infringers will be able to avoid this system. The following types of copyright infringement are not targeted at the moment:

* Watching TV shows and movies uploaded to YouTube and other video sites by unauthorized users.

* Downloading copyrighted content directly from “file locker”-type websites, not peer-to-peer networks...

So for the time being, that's not an issue.

It also says, Consequences, What Consequences?

Everyone knows that “you’re out” after three strikes, but what happens after six strikes? The answer, which may surprise you, is nothing at all.Law enforcement can take you to court, but the ISPs won't even cut off your connection. They do nothing ( ... )

Awesome, I'm glad to hear it! :)

Oh okay, that's good. I know very little about these sites and what they're classified as, lol... so that really helps. Hopefully it won't be an issue for a while.

Wow. That's good to know. And yeah, I can see them more likely to go after the big offenders who would download lots of movies every single day.

Thanks :) Not only has the guy been pushing us to do more work than we're capable of, but he's been hitting on a few of us as well. The mayor even has a problem with him, so the village clerk is going to sit him down next week and talk to him. If he keeps up the BS she's going straight to his boss. I thought I heard he was supposed to transition out soon - really hoping so (and that his successor will be better)!
