Friend keeps spoiling things for me

This is a pretty minor problem, but one that drives me a little nuts. I'm completely opposed to spoilers for TV shows and books and the like that I read. It's to the point where I refuse to watch the "next time on x" previews. My friend knows this ( Read more... )

If you've already told her you hate spoilers and she keeps doing it, then she is deliberately ignoring your wants/needs to satisfy something within herself. She is not being a friend. If I were you, I *might* tell her she has one more chance and if she continues to ignore your wishes, then you will cut her off. It might seem that this is not a big enough issue to end a friendship but she is deliberately disrespecting your wishes and being rude.

Hmm I wouldn't really do too much abrupt things. I also hate spoilers (even though I don't watch that many series.. the ones I watch, I watch at my own pace) What I mostly do is make a bit of fun out of it. Whenever the spoilers come up I shout: "Ohh spoiler alert" and like a child I put my fingers in my ears and say "la la la, or whatever tune comes up" It works pretty well.. At first people laugh at it, but eventually they understand. And now I barely have any spoilers at all..

You can't control how she'll feel about what you say, and it's not your fault if you state a need and she gets offended by it. That's on her, not on you. Are you biting your tongue about other things that are important to you because you don't want to upset her? That's not a healthy friendship dynamic ( ... )

IAWTC. I just wanted to add that I also suffer from depression and being sensitive. What really helps me is when friends and family are honest with me instead of protecting their feelings from me. When people are not open about how they feel, that makes me more paranoid about the true meaning of their actions.
