Nah, it's a predictable cycle for the most part, usually every other month or longer, but the past month or so it's been that my sleep schedule's been stuck primarily in nocturnal mode. I wouldn't mind, but I need to be up at 9am for class (and had needed to get up at 6am for work), so it's more than a little frustrating, constantly tricking my body to swing my sleep schedule back around how I want it, just to end up with it back around to nocturnal every weekend or sooner.
Nope, I don't like coffee at all, so I don't drink it. If I need a bit of caffeine to keep myself awake, I get some iced tea or hot green tea (though that means I'd have to make it myself).
Well, yes, it's just that my way requires so much more effort and maintenance sometimes, and it's rather tiring, frustrating, and so very annoying then. So I vent now and then. ^_^;
I love that word 'insomniatic'. Do you perchance consume a lot of caffeine?
I find I keep bad sleep cycles going by waking up tired, then having extra caffeine just to get through the day, which then leads to another bad night's sleep, and so on.
I take over the counter sleeping pills (sleep-eze) three nights a week, but they don't work well if I eat a large dinner late.
Actually, I don't consume any caffeine. My only drinks are milk, water, juice and occasionally tea.
I'm partially nocturnal by nature, but I can usually get an agreeable later-morning/half-night schedule going without issue, but lately it's stuck entirely evening-to-dawn-awake on me.
I'll keep trying, but it's just getting really annoying.

It sounds as though you take care of yourself and obviously you know your own limits best. :)
