One of my favorite features on my current account is text alerts. My phone gets an auto-generated text alert every time I drop below a certain amount (which I choose), every time I overdraft, every time a direct deposit hits -- and every time my card is used for over an amount I choose. The alert is almost instantaneous -- when I'm buying groceries, my phone beeps before I even have my wallet back in my pocket, generally.

Which means that if my card number is ever compromised, I'll know within seconds when someone starts using it, and I'll be able to alert the bank and get the card shut down before anything disastrous happens.
