simoun_sibyllae Guragie observed her new partner from the shadow of the hangar. She had just been promoted to the ranks of the Sibylla, and she hadn’t learned the regal boldness that they always carried with them like a cross. Instead she was shy and unassuming, and could only watch her lithe brown-haired partner with a timid affection from afar.
Anubitue. That was the name given to her. She whispered it a few times, letting the syllables run experimentally over her tongue. Anubitue was a distinguished Sibylla, who had no problem performing difficult Ri-Maajon like the Raging Sea. She had been the one Guragie had aspired to be like when she was still a cadet. Now here she was, about to be Anubitue’s partner! She thought she could die from joy.
As if she could hear her name, Anubitue turned around, and Guragie almost fled behind a Simoun in surprise. Oh god, she thought, she’s walking over! She looked frantically left and right for a convenient spot to stare at. The footsteps got nearer and nearer, until finally Guragie was forced to oblige and look at the girl standing before her.
“Hello,” Anubitue’s pleasant voice chimed out.
“Uh, hi,” Guragie stammered.
Without another word, Anubitue’s hands went to Guragie’s shoulders. She blushed furiously. Then they went to her cheeks, and as Anubitue leaned closer Guragie almost wet herself with panic at the notion that this gorgeous young girl was about to kiss her. She closed her eyes in anticipation, breathing shallowly. The kiss never came.
With a start, Guragie opened her eyes, to find Anubitue threading a red silk ribbon through her hair.
“Is it okay if I do this?” Anubitue asked, as her fingers grazed the back of Guragie’s neck. Guragie nodded mutely, mouth open in astonishment.
Anubitue knotted the ribbon, stepped back, and frowned.
“No, not right,” she muttered to herself, then moved forward to undo the ribbon. She began working the ribbon through again, tongue sticking out in concentration. Her fingers caught on a snarl in Guragie’s hair and she sighed in frustration.
Guragie smiled, her shyness forgotten.
“Here, I can do it,” she said to Anubitue, enclosing the other girl’s hands with her own. They were lined with calluses, she noticed, running her hands lightly through Anubitue’s before going to the ribbon and tying it quickly with a neat knot.
“Thanks,” Anubitue said with an awkward smile, “I was never very good at doing those.”
“But I was so excited when I heard you were going to be my Saggita,” she rambled on, “I wanted to get you something, and I thought your hair was very pretty, so I went out and got you a ribbon. Do you like it?”
Guragie grinned at this revelation.
“I love it,” she said.
“It’s pretty on you,” Anubitue said happily, clapping her hands together. Guragie couldn’t help but shake her head in amusement at Anubitue’s childish exuberance at something as simple as a ribbon threaded through her hair. Still, she blushed and ducked her head appreciatively, and her hand rose to touch the ribbon in admiration.
“Anyway,” Anubitue said, clearing her throat in embarrassment, “Shall we go fly then?”
