Caffeine Baby
In the shadows we lived on caffeine.
The gods we worshiped
Were, as it were,
Immeasurably exotic,
A mild addiction.
Sugar and milk
Diluted the bitter lessons.
We ignored
And acquired a softer, rounder
Homogeneous identity.
Next was the elitism.
Specific sects, brands,
Two hundred dollars of gleaming silver
Reflecting the stares of indentured children.
It is no matter; we gave back.
