Bee

This fellow (or perhaps she is a lady, how do you tell with bees?) landed in front of me a few days ago as I was photographing other things. Quite cute, I think.

Only queen bees are female, and it's vanishingly unlikely you'll find one of those just wandering about.

In fact, bee sex is even stranger than that.

Actually, worker bees are female, as well.

(It's the drones which are male.)

Agreed. Queen Bee is the only fertile female, but the workers are female, too.

It's strange to think that although it's the Queen that lays the eggs, it's the *other females* who decide what those eggs will become.

I love bee photos! I'm jealous of your macro capabilities. ;)

Hi there. Thank you for sending the moleskine. I was standing in my kitchen thinking "what on Earth...?" as I turned the package over in my hands.
Made my day.

May I add you?

Hiya, I'm glad it arrived at last. First time I tried to send it to you, it arrived back on my desk a week later.

Apologies for my hand writing.

No need to apologize. It was all part of the endearing mystique of the moment.

Endearing mystique? Is that possible? I might be prone to hyperbole.

Just thought you should know that this picture indirectly inspired the decision to go with a bee as the 'mascot' for Oxford Geek Night 7. I actually think your photo's a lot cooler than the one we went for, and I would have been all for getting your permission to use it, but I guess our designer types couldn't make it work with the cropping at the top. (Bah, slackers... I'm sure it would only have been a two minute job in photoshop :-) )
