Suggestions for things to do and places to stay in Canada (general area of Edmonton) please.

I'm going to be there from about the 18th to the 27th - perhaps longer if I'm given good ideas. The 20th to 25th is already taken up with a conference, that that still leaves a few days to kill.

I love Edmonton; it's my second favorite place after Vancouver ( ... )

Excellent, this is what I was after.

Will I be at a massive disadvantage not driving?

Hmmm. We always used it to good effect, but we planned our trips so that we stayed where we wanted to be, if you know what I mean. Here's a link to the Edmonton Transit. I don't know why it has to be this monster link, but hey ( ... )

As far as I know, the conference is at the university. I really should try and find out exactly though.

I'm avoiding the US for the time being - she could come see me though...

Sadly I don't think she could make it :(

You'd have a free place to stay.

I second White Ave. It's a lot of fun with many weird shops. Not really Camden Market, but getting there.

An interesting/geeky think to check out is the Oil Museum in Devon, about 30 minutes drive from Edmonton. I've got some pictures from last summer...

They've got about six rigs set up with lots of other cool machines. One of the rigs works and, every now and then, they dig a hole under the museum a little bit deeper to demo it.

The Alberta Aviation Museum, I found was very cool and well worth a visit. The Odyssium - a sort-of hands-on science museum I found to be just OK; missing it would have been no tragedy ( ... )

Thanks for the info - should be enough to keep me busy for a while then.

I'm hoping I can find some places to photograph too. Is public transport any good there?

It's pretty good. There's a light-rail system. Though it's only got one line and about ten stations, I never used it as it never went anywhere I wanted to go; when I was over in the summer, I mostly got around by cycling.

The city's bus network is execllent.

Just read your trip post, now that is the kind of thing I'd love to do, but I have no idea how to actually go about it. I rather suck at organisation that way really.
