The wild colonial boy - Australia bound

Jul 21, 2009 07:13

There is a time for the leaving. The Freer family have been granted a visa allowing us to migrate and remain indefinitely in Australia, and Barbs and I have talked about it and we will convert that into citizenship as soon as possible (4 years), as we believe that is the right and honorable thing to do ( Read more... )

Condolences for the grief, best wishes for the future. It has to be tough but I'm glad there's some hope in there, too.

Huzzah!
And welcome. The first* lamington's on me!
Any idea where in Oz you'll be heading?
* Although technically it's traditionally given when you gain citizenship. And it's a tradition that's dying out [along with the CWA (Country Woman's Association) that started it].

Thanks mate. There are a few local hurdles to be climbed before we head anywhere - like selling up. But at the moment the daydream is Flinders Island.

I've only been to Chappell Island (I think), and that was quite some time ago. With a friend who was a herpetologist, so I'll give you one guess as to why we were there.*
But I've heard nice things about Flinders Island, especially if my memory is correct and it's the first peak in the Three Peaks race (I've walked/cycled the other two peaks of the race).
* Notechis ater serventyi really are quite impressive, especially compared to their wimpier mainland cousins. But don't worry, they're apparently spread through the whole Furneaux Group, so there is always the possibility that you'll get to meet one too. Even though their major prey is the mutton bird rookeries. [You may have noticed the perverse pride we take in our wildlife.]

Thank you. I am glad we have a network of friends and contacts there. It makes it less strange.

While nothing this major works out exactly as anticipated, I hope the reality you wind up with is at least as good as what you anticipate.

of course it never will be. But the reality here is such that it is worth leaving. And I like the attitude to equality. That seems worth having.
