It's been a case of "Caesar's wife must be seen to be above reproach" rather than "Caesar's wife must be above reproach" for quite a while now in most western democracies. There were quite a number of federal police investigations in Oz during the last parliament in order to trace links that were simply embarrassing to the government. Wheras the "leaks" that followed the government line went uninvestigated, even if they were "sensitive" matters.

A friend of mine (from Oz) said the natural australian attitude to politicians was that they're all liars and thieves unless they proved otherwise. (grin) What has happened to this noble sentiment? I mean putting them in a sheep-paddock in the middle of nowhere doesn't seem to have worked. And (suspiciously) what happened to the sheep?

Dave, the sheep are in Parliament. Natural consequence of letting thieves and liars get too close to a sheep paddock.
