uberlisting for August

Sep 16, 2014 23:06

Quite a few things (six of 'em, actually, and one in progress) this month, including some things for which the Uberlist was pretty much designed to make happen.

8. Read a book - Aug

A couple down this month, including a fiction book by an acquaintance that sadly did little for me, plus...

27. Read a film book

...J. Hoberman's fascinating FILM AFTER FILM, which begins by defining September 11th as a moment that, among other things, completely changed cinema, and goes from there. Infectious social history, and a fine read.

45. Try yet another new theatre company

Went back to CustomMade and checked out the Multi-Ethnic Theatre Company's production of August Wilson's Jitney, one of his ten plays cycling through the twentieth century via Pittsburgh's Hill District. Pleased to finally see one of the plays in this storied cycle, via a theatre company that was new to me - the kind of experience for which Uberlist was invented. I'm pleased to see that the company intends to mount a different play from the cycle each year (August in August, the initiative's called) and look forward to seeing more.

53. House of Sparrows entry - Aug

My essays on the Harry Potter movies are momentarily stalled, but I was moved to write about Guardians of the Galaxy, or at least a self-therapy thing to figure out why, in the end, I didn't care about it.

72. A third thing at the Stanford

After a month or two of teasing the Stanford finally unleashed a summer calendar that's simply fantastic. I was pretty much guaranteed to see a couple of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies they're showing Thursdays and Fridays thru October - the Caltrain schedules make it tough to stick for the Charlie Chan movies they've been paired with, but this will change as the Chan movies get shorter.

81. Get your eyes checked

In progress, finally - got onto VSP and have an appointment to see my old eye doctor, the beautifully named Rochelle Slamovich, next week.

97. [Redacted]

Whatever it is, it continues.
